Farms at Work is a community-based non-profit project dedicated to supporting and growing the farm community and local food system in east central Ontario, as well as promoting environmental stewardship on farms. We are a 10-year old charitable project on Tides Canada Initiatives shared platform and operate on a modest annual budget.

As a project of Tides Canada, Farms at Work is governed by a volunteer Steering Committee with responsibility for strategic direction, as well as overseeing fundraising, communications, operations, programming and finances. Farms at Work is seeking three individuals to join our project Steering Committee. The positions are for a three-year term.

We are looking for individuals enthusiastic about our work, and with an interest in and/or experience in the following areas:

  1. Financial Management and Budgets
  2. Communications and Social Media
  3. Fundraising
  4. Social Enterprise
  5. Web Maintenance and Design
  6. Organizational Development
  7. Policy

We are seeking hands-on, hardworking people who will commit to rolling up their sleeves and pitching in when needed. Other characteristics that are highly valued include accountability, teamwork and professionalism.

We are hoping to have wide geographic representation of Committee members across the region of east central Ontario.

Steering Committee members commit to

  1. attending up to 6 meetings of the Committee per year, held evenings or on weekends depending on length; not all meetings will be in-person
  2. corresponding as needed between meetings
  3. taking on responsibility for oversight of one area of activity, alone or as part of a team
  4. becoming familiar with farm and food organizations in their geographical area, and providing a bridge for communications as needed

The total time commitment expected is approximately 5 hours per month, unless special projects are underway. Over the coming 12-18 months, strategic planning will be a priority.
