Position: Intake worker

About the NDG Food Depot

Founded in 1986, the NDG Food Depot is a community-based non-profit organization that works collaboratively with its community to address the root causes of hunger and poverty in NDG and the surrounding areas in a manner that ensures dignity, community engagement and the development of human potential.

At the NDG Food Depot, we offer programming to support the food security and healthy eating habits of youth, families and individuals. These activities include community meals, kitchen workshops, after-school programs, gardens and farmer’s markets.

Responsibilities / Tasks:

  • Train and support volunteers, register participants, open new participant files, troubleshoot and track issues, generate reports on our database (Salesforce).
  • Train and oversee intake volunteers, assess and troubleshoot situations as they arise.
  • Respond to requests for information on how to register, plan and manage appointments for new registrations, print and update welcome packages.
  • First assessment of new participants, including presenting services and community resources.
  • Oversee volunteers to organize the set-up, take down and cleanup of the front of house area.
  • Manage the flow of participants in and out of the program space, along with volunteers.
  • Respond to questions and direct participants to appropriate staff or resources.
  • Ensure that safety procedures are followed and intervene in emergency situations, intervene when the Respect Policy is not followed and direct complaints.
  • Communicate with team members as needed.
  • Get to know partner organizations, their staff and their participants and be on site at strategic times to share information about Depot programs and services.
  • Hand out fliers and recruit families to upcoming Depot events and track referrals given.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both French and English.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Able to work collaboratively as part of a team within a diverse community environment.
  • Comfortable using Windows computers and Google Drive.
  • Able to travel efficiently by foot or bicycle within the neighborhood.
  • Experience working with community organizations or knowledge of the NDG community.
  • Good organizational and time management skills. Ability to manage stressful situations and multitask under pressure.
  • Experience or training in non-violent communication and conflict de-escalation and/or first aid training is an asset.
  • Passionate about good, healthy food for all.

Contract Conditions:

  • Must be available to work on Tuesdays from 1pm - 7:30pm and on Fridays from 9am - 3pm.
  • 8 month contract, late July 2018 to March 31st, 2019;
  • Salary: 15$ per hour.
  • Reports directly to: Volunteer Coordinator.

At The Depot, we offer programming to support the food security and healthy eating habits of youth, families and individuals. These activities include community meals, kitchen workshops, after-school programs, gardens and farmer’s markets.

About our food distribution program: Our twice-weekly (Tuesdays and Fridays) emergency food baskets provide healthy groceries at no cost for members of our community. A free meal program open to all runs in parallel to the distribution program each week.

About this position: Intake is the process by which participants are checked in when they come for an emergency food basket, as well as registering participants coming for the first time. Tasks are carried out by a team of volunteers, as well as the Volunteer Coordinator and the Support and Referral Coordinator. Working closely with this team, the Intake Worker will be responsible to ensure the smooth running of the intake process and the flow of people in the space during the food distribution/community meal program. The Intake Worker will also spend a few hours per week among our partner organizations in the NDG community to familiarize families with the Depot’s many programs and services and to promote upcoming events.
