Position: Community Lunch Program Cook
Organization: Renfrew Park Community Association
Location: Vancouver East Side, BC

Scope of Work

Are you an experienced and team-oriented leader who is passionate about food and community? We are looking for a reliable and energetic person to work as lead cook for our weekly drop-in community lunch program. Renfrew Park Community Centre offers a weekly lunch program to members of our community every Friday. The cook will be a key part of the team, using a community development approach to oversee and support volunteers and participants to have increased food knowledge and leadership capacity.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting all food and service preparations for multi-course lunches for up to 30 people per sitting
  • Ensure kitchen is cleaned and program supplies (utensils and appliances) are neatly stored after the program
  • Orient, train, and supervise an intercultural volunteer team
  • Prepare shopping lists and organize weekly shopping
  • Track food, supplies, and equipment inventory
  • Organize and submit monthly menus based on feedback from volunteers, participants, and staff by established deadlines
  • Submit receipts for all program supplies to staff for authorization of reimbursement
  • Adhere to all food safety standards and regulations as required by VCH and Centre staff
  • Other duties incidental to meal preparation, cooking, and clean-up for the drop-in.
  • To engage and interact with the public during the meal. Develop relationships and bonds with the public.

The successful applicant should demonstrate

  • Ability to plan and prepare a variety of meals that are simple, delicious, nutritious and hearty that reflect the diverse nutritional needs and food traditions in the community
  • Ability to manage budget, inventory, minimize food waste, and make the most of available ingredients
  • Adaptability, creative problem-solving, good humour, and an even temperament in unpredictable circumstances
  • Friendly, courteous, affable disposition and an ability to engage with participants of diverse backgrounds and experiences
  • Knowledge of food security issues
  • Excellent customer service, positive work ethic, good rapport skills, leadership skills, communication skills, team skills
  • Reliability, punctuality, honesty, integrity, trustworthiness
  • Professional grooming and self-presentation

Qualifications

  • Food Safe level 1 required, Food Safe level 2 preferred
  • 2+ years previous cooking experience
  • Physical ability to lift up to 25lbs with ease

Terms of Employment

  • $21 per hour + 4% in lieu of benefits and holiday pay.
  • Every Friday beginning October 5, 2018 (except for holidays, special events or closure).
  • 7 hours a week (which includes 1-2 hours for shopping)
