Full or Part-time field hand at Zaklan Heritage Farm
About Zaklan Heritage Farm
We are three young farmers running a small mixed vegetable farm in the heart of Surrey (30 min. drive from Vancouver). In addition to our 1.5 acres in mixed veggie production, we have a flock of laying hens that we rotate around the pasture. Our operation is run with a small walk-behind BCS tractor and hand tools (think Jean-Martin Fortier methods). During the growing season we attend one market a week from May-October, all within 20 min of the farm. We sell and deliver to several restaurants in Vancouver on a weekly basis, as well as running a 60 member CSA program. We are looking for someone with an interest in learning about small scale agriculture, who has a good work ethic and enjoys getting dirty and working hard. We have all been farming for over 7 seasons and are happy to share the knowledge we have gained during this time with our employees. If you specific learning goals (production or business) we are happy to explore that with you over the season.
We are hiring for one full-time (35-40 hours a week) and one part-time (16-24 hrs a week) position. Please state your preference in your cover letter.
This position is full-time from May-October. There is potential for part-time hours in April and November. The full-time position would work Tuesday-Saturday 8 hours a day (35-40hours a week).
You will work alongside us during the season with tasks such as weeding, bed prep, transplanting, seeding, harvesting, CSA packing, market preparations and other daily jobs at the farm. We are looking for someone interested in participating in the daily care of the laying hens under our guidance. There is potential in this position to work at the weekly New West Farmers Market with us on Thursdays. We often have volunteers and community members help-out during the season, an ability to take a leadership role and provide direction for volunteers is an asset.
This position is part-time (16-24 hours a week) from May-September. The part-time position would be for work on Wednesdays and Fridays with the potential of an additional day depending on work load and seasonality.
This role is primarily as a harvest, washing, and packing assistant. There will be additional field tasks required depending on the season.
We are looking for an employee who has some previous experience or knowledge of, and an interest in sustainable farming. Has a good work ethic, isn’t afraid of hard physical work for weeks on end, and is willing to work in all weather. We are looking for someone who can work in a team as well as independently and can be self motivated when it comes to completing tasks. There is opportunity for leadership roles with respect to tasks on the farm and working with volunteers. Candidates need to be flexible and willing to adapt to changing schedules and plans as things shift at the farm.
