Position: Emergency Preparedness Nutrition: Education and Research - Canada Summer Job
Type: summer job / age 30 & under

Note: This position is part of the Canada Summer Jobs program for youths age 15-30 years old. Employment is full-time (35 hours/week) for 8 weeks.

Seeking a curious nutritionist student with experience/interest working with diverse diets. The St. James Town Co-op is a community-based democratically owned co-op. We have an active garden and bulk food buying club, where community members grow and purchase healthy affordable food. We are also in the final stages of negotiations with the city to begin a larger food hub that grows and processes organic year-round food in the neighbourhood and turns food waste into energy.

Looking ahead in the face of pandemic and climate change, the St. James Town Co-op has a keen interest in developing emergency healthy food stores for the residents and allies of the neighbourhood of St. James Town. We want you to research, develop and demonstrate nutritious recipes for dehydrated meals that individuals and families connected to our co-op can make and store for emergencies. You will work with the food the is being bought and grown through the co-op, as well as make recommendations for future items that should be purchased/sourced for your recipes.

Your time will be split approximately: 25-30hrs a week nutritional research and education development, 5-10hrs a week garden support work.


  • Research emergency food storage, dehydrated meals, and emergency nutritional needs
  • Compile and develop recipes for dehydrated meals that individuals can make, with ingredients sourced through the co-operative
  • Create educational video demonstrations for public viewing on social media and our website (publishing will be handled by marketing and outreach summer staff)

An ideal candidate would also have an interest in gardening and will support the garden with physical maintenance, led by other staff and using pandemic safety protocols.


  • Young Person 15-30 years old (federal grant requirements)
  • Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident (federal grant requirements)
  • Preference Given to St. James Town Residents
