Position: Farm Apprentice 2017
Type: full-time organic apprentice/intern with accom., food, stipend, more (see below)
Organization: Footstep Organics
Location: Quinte West, Ontario (near Prince Edward County, Belleville)
Footstep Organics is a small family farm established in 2012. We grow organic vegetables for Toronto farmers markets and a small CSA. We also produce a small amount of meat and eggs. We gained our knowledge of farming through doing farm apprenticeships, as well as working on an incubator farm that provided opportunity to take courses through the Ecological Farmers Association of Ontario. We also have operated the McVean Training Farm Program for the past two years, where we have gained experience with working with students and delivering an organized farmer education program. We are seeking 1-2 apprentices to work on the farm from early May to October.
Apprentices will learn all aspects of operating a financially viable and successful vegetable farm. This will include greenhouse management and seedling production, land preparation, fertility management, weed and pest management, best harvesting practices, and marketing. In addition to the vegetable operation, apprentices will gain experience in small scale egg and pork production. Apprentices will learn through experiential teaching and working right along side the farmer.
Clean and comfortable accomodations are provided on the farm in a granny suite adjacent to the farm house, with a separate kitchen, living room, bedroom, and bathroom. Apprentices will also have access to produce from the farm, as well as additional groceries and essential items provided by the farm. Couples are encouraged to apply, and we welcome all backgrounds and identities. A monthly stipend will be given based on the amount of hours per week the apprentice is able to work. The apprenticeship can be adapted to the individual in terms of time commitment and hours of labour per week.
