Position: Ecological Farm Intern(s)

Location: near Belleville, Ontario
Dates: starting in September, 2 – 3 month stay

Interested in exploring & learning more about ecological farming, self-sufficiency, organic lifestyle, cooperative living?

Opportunity to experience /learn about oxen, sustainable logging/ wood splitting, permaculture, food forest establishment, organic orchard care, growing vegetables & raising heritage cattle & poultry. This mentorship is a chance to work & enjoy living in harmony with nature, experience the realities of farming/ rural life, cooperative approaches, organic food production, preserving & enjoying produce from garden.

This minimum 2-3 month stay opportunity is appropriate to an individual or couple who is not maintaining a job and is willing to be predominantly on-farm with the odd weekend away. We are diversity friendly. Must be able-bodied, trustworthy, value the natural environment, care about animals and is experienced and/ or focused upon learning cooperative living/ peaceful approaches in relationship & communication; has excellent observational skills, is a dependable, self-starter with excellent problem solving & organizational skills, who can work independently. Experience with cattle, carpentry, plumbing, machinery are all assets but, not required. Steel-toed boots and maintaining farm safety protocols are required.

Part-time duties include daily walking property/ farm security, assisting with oxen, irrigation, maintenance of food gardens, tasks associated with establishment of permaculture food forest, livestock care/ a bit of stall cleaning, farm maintenance, carpentry, invasive weed management. Must be willing to work in all weather.

Accommodation is a newly renovated, very private Coach House apartment with new appliances & deck with great view. Wifi available at main house or pay for your own service. Feel free to take online courses or connect with friends. Cell service works well here. Housing valued at $750/ month plus food; work hours in lieu of rent are 80 hours a month. We will treat you like family: so you are welcome to join us for dinner, downtime, as it suits you. In your downtime, try out your own vegetable crops, learn to bake breads, cook with us, meditate with us, or read from our library. Walk 5 minutes to a river swimming hole, enjoy the varied habitat & trails here on farm. This is a great opportunity for people who are writers, meditators, painters, readers, naturalists, bird watchers. Our place is close to hiking trails, Frontenac Park, Bay of Quinte. Local tourist attractions & wineries within an hour's drive. Canoeing/ saling and fishing are all local. 

Farming and taking care of ecological land is serious work (a big responsibility). It is not suitable for people who smoke, who cannot do sustained physical labour, who enjoy making a lot of noise as we are conscientious to our neighbours.

This position will expose you to all aspects/ realties of organics, farming, rural, sustainable living. Potential for future work/ possible sustainable community. Potential to run your own market garden business from the farm in future years for the right candidate.

Our high-welfare heritage farm is 64 acres of meadow, coniferous & hardwood forest. It is truly a paradise with varied habitats & ecology. We are focused upon fostering the best in people and seek the same gentle care in return.
