Salt & Harrow Farm 2019 Apprenticeship Program, Full-Time, Seasonal
Salt & Harrow Farm is a 37-acre, certified organic farm, located in French Creek on Vancouver Island between the towns of Parksville and Qualicum Beach. Ten acres are devoted to vegetable production, producing over 50 varieties of vegetables, legumes, fruits, and herbs. We sell our produce at eight farmers markets, to restaurants, our Salt & Harrow Storehouse, and through a full-choice membership program.
An apprenticeship at Salt & Harrow Farm is for individuals with a serious interest in gaining the skills necessary to grow food for market or those who are interested in exploring farming as a career. Most of the training will be through hands-on experience and the skills learned will be focused on organic agriculture and marketing.
We have a diverse farming operation, which requires a wide range of skills: greenhouse seedling production, field planting, weeding and harvesting, produce deliveries, building and repairing infrastructure. We work in a rural community. Be prepared for physically demanding work. Our farmers are committed to sharing their knowledge with all of our apprentices. We work hard and want to share the rewards of this profession with aspiring farmers.
While some exposure to commercial agriculture is preferred, it is not required as long as one has a good attitude and work ethic.
Our ideal candidate has:
The apprenticeship begins May 1st and ends October 31st. We cannot make commitments for work beyond the end of October. The work will vary during the season as each change in temperature provides a new focus for the work that needs to be done. We share a meal as a crew every week and this is an opportunity to ask questions and enjoy the bounty of the farm. Most of our Apprentices live on the farm in shared cabins with a separate trailer for cooking and showers.
We will go over the duties, class schedule, and chore list at the beginning of the season. You can expect six on farm workshops throughout the growing season. Two weeks advance notice is required for vacation breaks.
This is a full-time, seasonal position, approx. 40-50 hrs/week, Tuesday through Saturday, with some room for flexibility if help is needed at the farmers markets or with weekend chores. Apprentices are paid $13/hr. with 4% vacation pay and access to farm vegetables. Apprentices living on the farm will be charged for room & board.
