Our farm is built around growing and learning how to run a farm to be both profitable and enjoyable. We have lived on our 100 acre farm for almost 8 years and are going into our 7th growing season. We have experienced weather extremes, long work hours, achievements and disappointments. With all of this we have gained much experience and will continue to, as we continue to farm and learn. We are looking to share our experiences with someone wanting learn and gain farming experience, who can also learn from our mistakes and implement their learnings on a potential future farm of their own. We offer an atmosphere conducive to enjoyable work and learning.
On our farm we have just under 2 acres of market garden where we produce over 20 different types of organically grown vegetables, plus sunflowers for cut flowers. We grow our vegetables more intensively which requires less space to grow an abundance of produce. We sell our produce and flowers at a couple of local farmers markets as well as some local businesses. We have implemented many techniques and tools to help with time savings and reducing labour. This allows us to create a better work-life balance and reduce burn out, this doesn’t mean it isn’t hard work at times, but we can show how we have implemented these changes over the years.
We will also be going into our 10th season of producing maple syrup, from a sugar bush that we rent just minutes away from our farm. An intern will have the chance to work with the maple syrup at our bottling kitchen.
We have some livestock on our farm, including laying hens and cattle, plus we raise meat chickens once a year for local pre-order.
We are looking to fill a full time intern position for our 2020 season, with trailer accommodation available if required, an $800 monthly stipend and access to food produced on the farm, all other food will be the responsibility of the intern.
The start date can be discussed, with the position finishing at the end of October.
Attributes we are looking for in an intern, include hard working, punctual, organized, friendly, self-starting, takes direction well, works well with others. Applicant must be comfortable to work in all types of weather and must be able to lift up to 50 lb.
No previous farming experience is necessary.
An intern on our farm will have the ability to work and gain experience in the following areas:
