Position: Food Assistant, Red Wolf Overnight Camp

Duration: This role is fixed term for 4 weeks from July 28 – August 25, 2019; with the possibility of additional weeks in July working with our Urban Camps in Toronto

The p.i.n.e. project fosters confidence, competence, resilience and connection to nature through transformative outdoor experiences for all ages in Toronto and beyond. Our work inspires a vital re-connection between people and nature, community and oneself. We work primarily with children and families in the urban context, delivering innovative year-round outdoor programming. Our programs include weekly programming for children during the school year, overnight camps in South Central Ontario, as well as highly sought-after day camps in Toronto. Position summary:

The p.i.n.e. project is seeking a backcountry food assistant, with experience working at children’s overnight camps, to join our Red Wolf Overnight Wilderness Camp staff team. Reporting to the Red Wolf Food Coordinator, the Food Assistant will be responsible for providing assistance to the Food Coordinator to oversee the process of ensuring food is provided to staff and campers at Red Wolf. Unlike many overnight camps, the entirety of Red Wolf Overnight Wilderness Camp takes place in a backcountry setting, with campers and staff living in tents, cooking for themselves over open fires, and living in harmony with the land. As such, this role is critical to ensuring the success of our camp. The Food Assistant would live on site in the backcountry setting.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Supporting food purchasing for camp groups
  • Assisting with food packing for camp groups
  • Assist with food clean-up and re-stock systems for groups
  • Assist with ensuring all special dietary needs are met
  • Ensure all food is properly labelled
  • Ensure a high level of quality, cleanliness, and food safety within the available facilities
  • Follow safe food handling and sanitary procedures
  • Ensure proper storage, maintenance and organization of food products, ongoing inventory, rotating stock
  • Coordinate with Food Coordinator and staff to ensure food needs are met
  • Drive program vehicles to and from program locations for necessary purchases if possible
  • Participate in staff training week and camp take-down weekend
  • Be prepared to work and live in a backcountry setting in all weather conditions (food is packed indoors)
  • Provide cover for absent staff as required

Qualifications and requirements:

  • Experience with food planning and packing overnight backcountry trips in a camp setting
  • Excellent problem solving skills, results focused, and able to work autonomously
  • Flexibility regarding assigned working hours, including days, evenings, overnights, weekends and holidays as required
  • Up to date Police Vulnerable Sectors Check
  • Up to date Standard First Aid and CPR-C or higher
  • Up to date Class G Driver’s License with clean driving record (preferred)
  • Food Handlers Certificate (preferred)
  • WHMIS

Staff must also:

  • Be enthusiastic, outgoing, and flexible
  • Have experience working with children
  • Be able and willing to work as part of a team
  • Show maturity and the ability to practice good judgement
  • Commitment to working in a socially inclusive environment, responding with sensitivity and personal awareness to the diverse needs of members
  • Identify with p.i.n.e.'s mission statement and core values
  • Have a desire to further their own naturalist/wilderness skills, mentoring techniques, and/or nature connection through professional development opportunities with p.i.n.e. staff members

Preference will be given to applicants who have:

  • Up to date National Lifeguard certification
  • Naturalist knowledge of local ecosystems
  • Up to date Wilderness First Aid certification (WFR/ WAFA) through Wilderness Medical
