Position: Part-time Gardener
Organization: Riverdale Hub
Location: Greenwood & Gerrard, East End Toronto, Ontario

Riverdale Hub is a vibrant green social enterprise located in the east end of Toronto. It currently serves marginalized women through a variety of programs and social enterprises. The social enterprises include a vegan café, community kitchen, along with event, office and co-working spaces. Our green building features a Rooftop Vegetable Garden, a Rainwater Garden, and a Green Roof. Programing includes a hospitality training program with the objective of establishing placement opportunities for the participants as well as other programs and projects that will assist women in reaching their full potential.

Gardener

In search of a part-time gardener to help our rooftop garden transition into the Winter season. From September onwards we will need an enthusiatic and motivated individual who is passionate about organic gardening to harvest our existing crops throughout the fall, and put in place plans for winterizing the garden. There are a number of projects you would take charge of, such as: converting our green roof into a vegetable garden to further increase yield, working on the rain water garden, and collaborating with other organizations to install a bee hive on the rooftop.

We also host a program called Women in the Garden for women to come and learn about gardening twice a week, and this position would require collaboration with the program coordinator to plan workshops and garden themed activities for the women to engage in.

This position would also require collaborating and working with our café, The Social Gardener. Farm-to-table cooking and providing fresh produce to the cafe, as well as assisting in the café with various tasks as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in the Environment field or equivalent program.
  • Experience and/or interest in gardening, sustainability, and environmental initiatives.
  • Motivation to follow projects through, and bring forward new ideas to advance the garden.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team, as well as independently
  • Flexibility and ability work as needed in different areas of the hub.
