Position: Horticulture Technician

Horticulture Technician

This job is funded by the Agriculture Youth Green Jobs Grant. Applicants must be 30 and under, a Canadian citizen, or permanent resident, and a first-time applicant to Youth Employment Strategy programs.

NutraPonics is looking for an extremely motivated and experienced individual to support our research and production efforts in the indoor vertical farming industry. If you are a passionate, hard-working, horticulturally minded individual aged 30 or younger, we would like to hear from you! Previous experience in leafy green production, the greenhouse industry, indoor grow environments, or with hydroponic-based growing systems is required.

The Technician position will support the Farm Manager in R&D efforts, and weekly production tasks, to ensure optimum quality product for our clients. This position is 60% research, 40% production. Key research activities are on new indoor growing systems. Production activities will include, but are not limited to: planning, seeding, watering, transplanting, harvesting, cleaning, and managing all aspects of growing a crop including plant health and indoor farm environment assessments.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work in an indoor farm, with a broad range of irrigation, media, crops, and lighting experiments
    • Key experimental responsibilities will be in comparing different growth systems through monitoring plant health and physiology
  • Conduct seeding, transplanting, harvesting, and cleaning procedures
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment
  • Quantification and reporting of data sets
  • Maintain accurate daily activity records and operation logs as directed
  • Daily sanitation and organization of all equipment present within the facility
  • Communicate effectively
  • Facility maintenance and troubleshooting as necessary


  • B.Sc. with five years, or M.Sc with four years of horticulture experience
  • Prior agricultural/horticulture experience and a passion for the industry are required
    • Specific knowledge of nutrients and plant sciences, plant physiology, and botany
    • Experience farming or growing in controlled environments (greenhouses)
  • Knowledge of horticultural equipment or aquaponic systems is an asset
    • Capable of performing routine management and able to make equipment repairs
  • Experience with construction and trades equipment
  • Experience with water sampling and general laboratory testing (pH, EC, nutrient testing, etc.)
  • Must be comfortable with working at heights
  • Class 5 driver’s license
  • Proficiency with computers and software (Microsoft Office, Agrilyst, etc.)
  • Able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks at a time, and learn new technologies
  • Self-starting, detail-oriented, hard-working, independent worker with demonstrated leadership and teamwork skills
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be 30 or under, to be eligible for the Agriculture Youth Green Jobs grant
