Position: Indigenous Relations Coordinator
Organization: Local Food and Farm Co-ops
Location: remote, with travel throughout Northern Ontario

Summary

Local Food and Farm Co-ops is currently accepting proposals for an Indigenous Relations Coordinator. The Coordinator will cultivate and strengthen partnerships and relations between the LFFC, its members and stakeholders, and Indigenous communities of Northern Ontario. This role will support self-determined Indigenous food activities and promote value chain coordination opportunities throughout Northern Ontario Indigenous communities. The goal of this work is to build the capacity of the Northern Ontario Local Food Co-operative movement to support Indigenous food resurgence, self-determination, and rights.

Organization description

LFFC is an incorporated non-profit cooperative that has provided organizing and development support for food and farming co-operatives and enterprises in Ontario since 2009. Our Mission: Fostering vibrant, resilient, connected and sustainable food and farm co-operatives.

Eligibility and guidelines

This contract is open to individual candidates and organizations with expertise in project or community development in the Ontario food and farming sector. The successful proponent will be expected to provide their own office space and equipment, and be resident in, or operate from Northern Ontario.

Key Duties

  • work closely with LFFC Coordinators and the Project Manager
  • work closely with NFDN Steering Committee
  • regular meetings, planning and discussion with LFFC team
  • guide organizational development in Indigenous inclusion within LFFC
  • seek and form good relations between LFFC, NFDN partner organizations and Indigenous communities
  • work with regional partners to evaluate barriers to, and opportunities for improving Indigenous food access in North Ontario
  • support ongoing projects, bringing together businesses and initiatives to develop self-determined food plans and projects based on community needs
  • develop and coordinate resources and learning opportunities, including workshops and networking events
  • facilitate mentorships and peer-to-peer communications between co-operatives, sector leaders and local food system stakeholders
  • collect and develop resources and tools for an online repository
  • participatory primary and secondary research and analysis
  • planning, recording and evaluation of project activities
  • reporting for a variety of audiences
  • ensure funders and community partners are recognized and engaged in project activities
  • support and promotion for events and associated programs in which LFFC is a partner

Qualifications

  • Indigenous lived experience, perspective and/or understanding regarding:
  • Indigenous foodways in Northern Ontario
  • Food resistance, resurgence, rights and self-determination
  • Food policy and colonial history impacting remote Indigenous communities in Northern Ontario
  • Co-operative, non-profit or community economic development
  • Clear and effective communication and interlocution skills
  • Ability to communicate in Ojibwe, Cree and/or Oji-Cree (preferred)
  • Experience with food supply or value chain coordination (preferred)
  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout Ontario, including to remote (fly-in/no road access) communities (travel expenses to be billed in addition to fees)
  • (following recommendations from public health officials regarding safer travel practices during COVID-19 pandemic)
  • Financial reporting experience
  • Fundraising experience (preferred)
  • Work well with supervisors, stakeholders and the public, embodying patience, tolerance and consideration
  • Strong ability to work independently

Remuneration & Contract Details

Wage: $3250 per month, billed monthly

Hours: Approximately 18 hours per week, or 78 hours per month

Location: remote, with travel throughout Northern Ontario

Duration: August 1st, 2020 - July 31st, 2021 with possibility to renew
