Positions: Fruit and vegetable farmer
Type: 2 positions, 1 full-time + 1 part-time
Organization: Fat Chance Farmstead
Location: Kingston, South Frontenac, Ontario

Fat Chance Farmstead is a certified organic fruit and vegetable farm located just with in the Kingston city boundary. The farm has an ever-increasing strawberry business alongside a 50 member food box (CSA) program. We are hiring for the positions of full time and part time farmer to help in the daily production, harvest and growth of the farm.

Fat Chance Farmstead has two main enterprises: the Food Box program and strawberry production. The fruit and vegetable farmer will be expected to work interchangeably between these two enterprises.

The Food Box program is an 18 week CSA with 50 members. On Tuesdays from 3-9pm, members pick up their Food Box on the farm, at a market-style table, filling their box with designated amounts of each item. Responsibilities related to the Food Box program:

  • seedling management and watering
  • transplanting vegetable crops
  • weeding, thinning and pruning
  • irrigation management
  • harvesting
  • cleaning and packing vegetables

Our strawberry production will expand significantly in 2018 in order to meet the demand for wholesale orders in Kingston, and additional strawberries will be planted in order to expand again in the 2019 season. Strawberries are harvested three times per week, with deliveries going out twice per week. The farmer will be responsible for planting, pruning, weeding and harvesting strawberries throughout the season.

After five years of renting land, we purchased our current farm in 2017 and will be growing food on our land for the first time in 2018. As a result, much of our farm is a ‘blank canvas’. Depending on timing and level of interest, the fruit and vegetable farmer could be involved in building projects, general land care, establishment of other fruit crops (apples, pears and raspberries), heavy equipment operation, new infrastructure and maintenance in addition to the regular responsibilities outlined above.
