Position: Meat Clerk
Organization: The Sweet Potato
Location: Dundas West & Keele, Toronto, Ontario


The Sweet Potato is a local and organic focused grocery in Toronto's west end. We aim to provide the friendliest service, and deliver a diverse offering of delicious and healthy products, while striving towards a more sustainable food system.


To cut, package, label, and display meat to standard. To serve customers at a high-volume service counter, assisting them with selection and preparing their orders.


  • Create excellent customer experiences and offer exemplary service

  • Weigh, label & package a variety of meat products for customers

  • Assist customers with their selections and orders

  • Ensure the department is well stocked and clean

  • Provide information about different products and ingredients

  • Ensure a clean and sanitary environment

  • Learn safe food handling skills


  • Basic Mathematics: Meat clerks have to weigh out meat for customers. The ability to add and subtract quickly is necessary.

  • Comfortable working with public. Meat clerks speak directly to our customers. Good listening skills, speaking and communicating calmly, effectively and in a friendly manner, and patience are necessary.

  • Stamina: Meat clerks often stand for long periods of time and are required to lift heavy objects.

  • Flexibility: Meat clerks will be asked to work nights, weekends and extended hours. Having a flexible schedule is key.

  • The essential duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Maintain a neat, well-groomed personal appearance at all times and observe Company dress code.
  • Adhere to all local and federal health and civil code regulations


  • Physical Demands - Standing, walking, reaching, bending, twisting, ability to carry/lift 40 lbs, and push/pull 400 lbs

  • Repetitive Action - Unload meat deliveries, stock, rotate and block merchandise in all meat cases, keep department organized and clean, operate and clean equipment and tools.

  • Working Conditions - Inside, Cold

  • Safety Risk Factors - Twisting, slippery floor surfaces, cluttered floor surfaces, toxic exposure, nuisance dust, fumes, sprays, hazardous cleaning solutions, operation of department equipment.
