Position: Food Education Manager
Organization: Loving Spoonful

Loving Spoonful works toward a healthy, food-secure community in Kingston, Ontario, by facilitating fresh food access, food education and community engagement. Fresh food delivery, school GROW Project garden programming, Community Kitchen programs and engaging the community around creating a better food system are all priorities for Loving Spoonful’s work.

The Role

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Food Education Manager provides comprehensive management of the food education programs for Loving Spoonful including, but not exclusive to Community Kitchens and the GROW Project. The Manager is responsible for food education programming through appropriate long-range planning, staff and volunteer management and program scheduling, tracking, reporting, evaluation, outreach and recognition. Responsibility for program funding, creation and maintenance of partnerships, and staff hiring are shared with the ED.

The position is full-time 40 hrs/week for a 13-month maternity leave contract beginning on July 17th, 2018. The nature of work means that the Manager must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as required.

The Wage: $48,000 to $ 52,000 + vacation, commensurate with experience.

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for a candidate with leadership experience and a passion for food security and non-profit work. They are able to manage multiple projects, guide staff, and ensure timely reporting on the successful implementation of diverse food education programs while planning for future programming. They inspire staff and the public about creating a healthier food system for all through food education and community building programs. They have related management experience, are highly organized and have demonstrated success building and maintaining strong community partnerships and delivering on program goals.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Program Management

  • Manage Loving Spoonful’s food education programs from development through execution and evaluation.
  • In coordination with the Executive Director, work to secure sustainable funding for existing or new food education programs.
  • Oversee Community Kitchen program: planning and overseeing the provision of workshops and series that teach individuals and groups basic, affordable, healthy cooking skills and connect people through healthy shared meals created in each workshop.
  • Oversee GROW Project, including the implementation of the Ontario Trillium Grant from 2017 to 2020 that will expand the program from 7 to 23 schools, providing in-class and garden programming, connecting primary school students to good food, community, collaboration, and to the environment.
  • Responsible for overseeing volunteer recruitment, selection, and coordination for food education programs to meet program needs.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with community stakeholders.
  • Assist in the creation and publication of program materials including but not limited to program curriculum and learning outcomes, communications, promotions and program successes.
  • Regular reporting on programs, including but not limited to the reporting required by funder contracts.

Health and Safety

  • Act as the Health & Safety representative for Loving Spoonful for food education programs.
  • Responsible as the supervisor for the organization to ensure the safety of program staff, volunteers and participants at all times
  • Ensure that work spaces are safe, and that all staff, volunteers and participants are instructed in safe working methods and food handling

Staff Management

  • Responsible for the oversight and management of the members of both employees and volunteers that work in food education programs
  • With oversight of the Executive Director, responsible for team performance, which includes recruitment, hiring, discipline and terminations
  • Provide strategic and operational leadership to the team, cultivating a strong team that is highly respected both within and outside the organization
  • Build an effective team through coaching, frequent feedback and collaboration
  • Develop and deliver appropriate staff and volunteer training programs
  • Develop and maintain program staffing schedules
  • Monitor program staffing and ensure that payroll is submitted on time
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Minimum 2 years experience managing multiple programs and staff
  • Education in a relevant field or equivalent experience
  • Experience working in a paid/volunteer capacity in the non-profit sector


  • Ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects
  • Strong staff, volunteer, and time management skills
  • Independent analytical thinking to plan, schedule, assess and implement programs to optimize results
  • Ability to adapt to daily changes in priorities
  • Knowledge about teaching food literacy and skills to marginalized populations
  • Thorough understanding of the Kingston Area food system, food security, food access, and food safety
  • Ability to maintain healthy partnerships across the community
  • Strong logistical coordination skills
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office, Google Drive, Dropbox, and social media
  • Experience with and interest in successful grant writing and other fund development
  • Attention to planning to ensure the safety and accommodation of program staff, volunteers and participants

Other Requirements

  • Flexibility and willingness to accommodate some evening and weekend work
  • Safe Food Handling certificate
  • Active driver’s license, current registration and insurance and a car to be used for work purposes as needed. (Mileage is reimbursed).
