Position: Kitchen Manager
School: Educo Adventure School

Location: 100 Mile House, BC Interior / Cariboo
Housing: accom. and food provided when onsite
Dates: April 28 – September 15th, 2020

Educo Adventure School is looking for a dynamic, passionate, and hardworking Kitchen Manager to support all food and nutrition related systems on all programming this summer.

Educo Adventure School aims to be more than just an outdoor classroom: we seek to create meaningful experiences that draw forth our students’ emotional, social, and spiritual development. We believe this is fostered through deepening connections with the natural world, embracing challenge, and learning the intricacies of intimate teamwork. We learn experientially – hands-on! Educo offers opportunities for young people to disconnect from the digital and online arenas and to cultivate a sense of belonging in the world as they journey through our local mountains, forests, lakes, and rivers. Educo Adventure School staff facilitate opportunities for youth to become self-aware and engaged with the people, communities, and natural world surrounding them.

Educo Adventure School has a rich history in youth work and community living. In a loving and supportive environment, we encourage each other to step beyond our preconceived limitations and to express ourselves fully and creatively. As a staff team, we work hard (and play harder). We work collaboratively and we value one another’s contributions. We ask of our staff what we ask of our students: a willingness to step beyond our comfort zone and to practice vulnerability and appreciation. If you prefer efficiency to collaboration, dislike ambiguity, and adhere to a very strict schedule, then leading at Educo Adventure School probably isn’t right for you. If you’re looking for a fun, multifaceted, and rewarding work environment that will push you every single day, then we want to hear from you!

The Kitchen Manager will work both independently and collaboratively with volunteers and Educo staff to prepare and serve delicious and nutritious meals for students and staff. With supervision and support from the Program Managers & Director, responsibilities will include:

Meal Planning: Plan nutritious and healthy meals, snacks, and beverages for students and staff during all courses and prep days. Plan alternative menu options for students and staff with dietary restrictions and allergies.

Food Preparation & Cooking: Prepare ingredients and cook meals for groups ranging in size from 12 to 75 people in an off-the-grid kitchen system.

Resource Management: Track inventory of ingredients, kitchen supplies (cleaning/dishwashing supplies, utensils, etc.), and site supplies (toilet paper, soap, etc.). File timely orders with grocery supply company to replenish stock on a regular basis.

Budget Management: Monitor food and site supply budget and make purchases within budget boundaries.

Relationship Management: Communicate positively with vendors, local community partners, health authority inspectors, students, and adult stakeholders (parents/guardians & teachers) regarding food arrangements, dietary needs and our food & beverage capabilities.

Leadership: Direct, supervise, and mentor team members (facilitators, kitchen assistants, and volunteers) when they are assisting in the kitchen. Act as Incident Commander in a kitchen or food emergency should the Program Director not be available.

Reporting: In coordination with the Program Director, confirm actual numbers of students & teachers/parents/guardians attending each course and the needed menu adjustments due to dietary restrictions and allergies. Track all food related expenses and equipment needs; communicate these to Program Manager in a timely manner.

Required Qualifications:

  • FOODSAFE Level 1 Certification
  • Occupational First Aid Certification (Levels 1, 2, or 3)
  • 3+ years experience (or equivalent) in large group meal preparation and kitchen management
  • 2+ years experience in food inventory, bulk grocery shopping, and budget management
  • Familiarity and comfort in large-scale meal preparation in rustic cooking environments (pumped water, propane stoves, limited space, etc.)

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience managing a cooking team for large-scale groups
  • Familiarity and experience in remote wilderness living and expeditions
  • Prior experience as a guide or leader in the outdoor industry

You love working with people. You are open and attentive to all individuals, internal or external to the organization. You are able to appreciate individuals for their diversity and uniqueness.

You love a challenge. You meet the diversity of daily tasks with a smile: encouraging tired kids, managing disclosures, loading the canoe trailer and bringing positivity to staff meetings at 6:30am on a cold spring morning. You take initiative for your learning where you don’t know how to do something.

You communicate clearly. You appreciate nuanced language that is inspirational and honest. You communicate in a way that empowers the people with whom you work.

You are creative. You tailor your mentorship approach to the needs of each staff member or student. You use ingenuity and innovation to be adaptive when plans change, to solve problems, and to make progress.

You value self-care. You are attuned to and manage your personal health and well-being. You can laugh at yourself in zany situations. You have the humility to ask for help when you need it.

You live outside the box. You embrace the realm beyond your comfort zone and you believe in inviting others to do the same.
