Headwaters Community Farm and Education Centre is a unique combination of organic agriculture and agro-tourism. Our aim is threefold: to feed our family and workers fresh, whole, nutritious foods; to use sustainable methods of farming and living to protect our beautiful environment; and to open our farm to outside visitors to share in our bounty and to educate them about healthy eating, ecological farming practices and homesteading skills.
As part of our team, the Livestock Intern will be coached by the landowner in the care and management of our various livestock: 6 highland cattle, 3 goats, 12 laying hens, up to 300 meat chickens, 20 turkeys, 2 horses and a donkey. We are using a rotational grazing system for the first time this year and need help keeping track of pasture health and observe animal foraging behaviour. We also free-range our poultry when possible while guarding them from predators. All creative ideas are welcome! You must love animlas, have a calm temperament and gentle disposition, be in great physical shape and able to work outdoors in all types of conditions. You will be in contact with the public and must be comfortable guiding tours and mentoring volunteer workers.
Duties include: daily feeding, cleaning stalls, transporting water, moving electrical fencing, haying, bagging grain, spreading manure, building new fencing and gates, helping to construct and repair shelters, and designing water systems. Will also include occasional gardening work.
Skills needed: Ability to use basic hand and power tools. Some handyman skills an asset. Must have a driver's licence.
Commitment: 45 hours a week, Monday to Saturday, May 1 to August 31. Ability to work until October 31st as asset.
