Karma Co-operative, Toronto's oldest member-owned co-operative grocery store, is looking for a full time Produce Manager/Assistant General Manager. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining a largely organic and locally focussed produce department. The candidate will also be responsible for performing duties in assisting the General Manager. Karma has operated as a grocery store and community gathering place for more than 40 years, and has an award winning produce department.
Merchandise and maintain a small produce department;
Manage product to maximize profitability and minimize shrink;
Maintain current and accurate product information in POS system;
Maintain day to day ordering/inventories;
Ensure products are ordered according to seasonality and demand;
Cover shipment shortages;
Oversee and maintain product quality;
Monitor receiving practices;
Organize and control produce cooler;
Maintain relationships with existing suppliers while encouraging and being open to new ones;
Operate cash registers on occasion;
Train and supervise employees and co-op member labour;
Perform General Manager duties when GM is unavailable, including details related to membership, operations and human resources.
The ideal candidate will have:
Experience in retail produce operations;
Knowledge of co-ops and member-owned organizations;
Knowledge of the sustainable food movement;
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written;
Be self-motivated, detail-oriented and energetic;
Knowledge of local producers and organic produce (how it is grown);
Excellent customer service;
Excellent time management and prioritization skills;
Enthusiasm for their work and a drive to be innovative;
Ability to work independently without supervision;
Ability to set goals and meet deadlines;
Experience in a management position considered an asset.
Education required: Grade 12 graduation
Anticipated start date: February 4, 2017
Position Hours: 40 hours/week (7:30 am - 3:30pm Tuesday to Saturday)
Compensation: $31,000 - $38,000 annual (commensurate with experience) + benefits and staff discount.
