About Potluck & the DTES Kitchen Tables Project

Potluck is an award winning social enterprise operating in the Downtown Eastside (DTES) of Vancouver, BC, on the traditional, ancestral, unceded territories of the Coast Salish people. DTES Kitchen Tables Project (Kitchen Tables), a program of Potluck Cafe Society, is grounded in the Right to Food philosophy and is the primary expression of Potluck’s mission to increase the food security of nutritionally vulnerable populations.

Founded in 2009, Kitchen Tables works in collaboration with DTES residents and food providers along with multiple collaborators to create a just and sustainable DTES food system that enables people to access abundant, healthy food in a dignified manner while creating jobs for people experiencing barriers to employment.

The Opportunity

The role of the DTES Kitchen Tables Project Manager is a unique, exciting and rewarding opportunity. As Project Manager, you will combine your passion for food system reform and community economic development with the required entrepreneurial skill to design and implement innovative projects that support people in place.

The role of the DTES Kitchen Tables Project Manager is 100% hands on, providing supportive leadership and mentorship to the Project’s DTES Community Staff, while overseeing the day-to-day operations of Kitchen Tables’ community-based programs and activities.

The Program Manager reports directly to Potluck’s Director of Food Strategy and works closely with the Executive Director along with others members of the management team. This position offers plenty of opportunity for personal and professional growth over a 1-3 year term.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Implementation and oversight of existing project activities
  • Recruitment, management and support of project staff
  • Maintaining and growing Kitchen Tables’ relationships and collaborations
  • Grant writing and fundraising to support new and existing projects
  • Managing Kitchen Tables website and social media accounts
  • Communicating project outcomes to internal and external stakeholders

Success in the role of DTES Kitchen Tables Project Manager will be achieved with:

  • exceptional communication skills; oral, written and artistic; digital and traditional;
  • an entrepreneurial spirit empowered with the business skills to design, launch and lead innovative, community-based projects;
  • the ability to work well with diverse collaborators including local residents, sister organizations and businesses, funder, investors, policy makers, research partners, and more;
  • a passion for the Right to Food Philosophy and reforming the food systems to privilege the needs of those who are most vulnerable;
  • the ability to pitch and win grant capital for new and existing initiatives;
  • a commitment to advancing the happiness and wellbeing of all DTES residents.

Qualifications

  • Broad knowledge of the food industry and the many facets of Vancouver’s local food system;
  • Deeper understanding of the issues arising from DTES community food insecurity, including the health of low-income residents and the challenges facing inner city food providers;
  • First-hand experience working in social enterprise; a studied familiarity with the principles of sustainable community economic development;
  • Business and management experience (food industry experience is an asset) including office, administrative and organizational skills;
  • A robust network of personal and professional contacts;
  • Frontline experience working with DTES residents and non-profit organizations;
  • Knowledge of current public policy environment as it relates to issues of social justice more broadly, and reconciliation, poverty alleviation, mental health and addiction, and social innovation more specifically;
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a leadership position (managing teams that include people experiencing barriers to employment is an asset); and
  • Solid character references who can attest to the fact that you’re a fun person to have around.
