ORGANIC FARMING

Position: Farm Hand
Farm: Quaker Oaks Farm
Location: Kawartha Lakes, Ontario (accom. available, see below)
Hours: full-time
Dates: May 1st till Thanksgiving

Who are we:

Quaker Oaks Farm is a small eclectic farm in the City of Kawartha Lakes. The farm sports a 1 acre market garden that is transitioning to no-till/no-dig. We are not certified organic, but do follow the guidlines. We have a on farm market store for direct sales, that is also the location where our CSA members pick up their shares. The farm also is a farm animal sanctuary, and we have a second retail store on the property that has been there for 24 years.

What we are looking for:

We are looking for a person with several years experience working in market gardens. Someone who is comfortable with their knowledge, but is interesting in continuing to learn and grow. This is a full time position starting May 1st, till Thanksgiving.

Responsibilties:

  • Transplanting
  • Seeding
  • Harvest/post harvest
  • General farm labour
  • Helping the farmer keep an eye out for problems in the field (ie:poor germination, pests)
  • Helping with a short hay season
  • Some market stand sales duties
  • Record keeping
  • Weeding

Skills and abilities:

  • Must be physically fit, and be able to lift 50lbs
  • Someone who doesn't mind working alone or as part of a team
  • Can take direction, and constructive criticism, but who is not afraid to give feedback, or advice from their experiences as a farmer
  • Can budget time wisely to accomplish tasks
  • Mature and positive attitude
  • Good people and customer service skills
  • Is flexible when met with curve balls of weather and circumstance

Job specifics:

40 hour work week. Generally we take a 1 hour lunch break, and have a couple small breaks tossed in for rehydration and snacks. Wage will be on a sliding scale depending on skills and abilities, starting at $15/hour

Lodging:

Preferably we would find someplace in the area for you to stay as there is no space in the farm house for another person. If that is not a option, we do have a bunk house that could be let out. There is no running water, or internet there (The farm is not serviced with high speed, we have to rely on costly mobile data plans). A cost for room and board would be worked out in this case.

Since we are half an hour from the closest town by car, it would be best if the applicant has a license and/or a car.

How to apply:

Please submit a one page letter of interst on why you are interested in small scale regenerative agriculture, your goals as a farmer, and what you hope to achieve/learn at Quaker Oaks Farm. Please also include a resume, with at least three professional references.

This position open to Canadian citizens or persons with a valid work visa only

Please email your letter of interest, resume, and references to Aden Spurr at:
