Position: Market Garden Assistant
Type: paid seasonal position, April-October
Organization: Art Farm Produce
Location: Warkworth, Trent Hills, Ontario (between Peterborough, Cobourg, Trenton, Belleville)
Art Farm Produce has been growing certified organic vegetables from 1998 to 2017. In 2018 we will continue to use only organically approved practices. Our property is 28 acres with approximately 2 acres under cultivation with some shrub and tree fruit. There are 30 laying hens and in summer we raise 100 free-range meat chickens. Crop rotation and cover crops are used. We have a drip irrigation system which pumps water from our spring-fed pond. (this pond, by the way, provides a very refreshing swim after hours of garden work!). Cut flowers are an important part of the Art Farm production.
The Market Garden Assistant will report to and take direction and guidance from the farm owner who is actively involved in the day-to-day farm operations.
This is a seasonal, PAID position starting mid April to the end of October. The hours are Tuesday to Friday 8 am to 4 pm.
Minimum wage of $14 per hour. Benefits include workers compensation in case of injury.
The position will be offered to someone who loves farm work, including fine detailed seeding and weeding, and who is also a good communicator, easy to work with and wants to learn from an experienced organic farmer. Previous experience working on an organic farm is an asset though we will also consider those applicants who are currently attending sustainable agriculture programs, students who require a co-op placement, and those who have completed previous farm internships.
