Position: On-farm training — market garden

Persephone Market Garden

Our farm is 100 acres of forest, swamp, meadows and market garden. We are passionate about food, farming, ecology and community. Kristine is the primary farmer, supported by Thorsten. We started market gardening in 2009 and in 2019 plan to grow on 1 acre. We market through a Community Shared Agriculture program, with a delivery season of 20 weeks (June – October), Eat Local Grey Bruce Cooperative (online farmers market), and direct to restaurants. We primarily use a walk-behind tractor and hand tools, though we do have a larger tractor for some jobs (like turning the compost). Crop rotation and intercropping are our primary pest (weed, disease, insects) management strategies and our fertility management is based on integration with livestock (a flock of about 30 sheep), along with cover cropping. In 2019, we are transitioning to a no-till approach; it will be an interesting season!

Over the years, we have developed a comprehensive on-farm training program – trainees receive detailed crop plans, standard operating procedures that describe our production process form seeding to washing and packing, in-the-field training, as well as monthly workshops. Our goal is to give you a foundation of knowledge and skills in farming, from the soil to business management.

We have one position available for the 2019 growing season and one is filled.

Trainees are involved in all aspects of the farm — seeding, planting, trellising, mulching, weeding, harvesting, washing and packing produce, as well as care of sheep.

Hours: Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm with 1 hour off for lunch and a 1/2 hour break in the morning. Weekends and statutory holidays are off. 1 week of vacation.

Start/End Date: mid/late April to late October/early November

Terms: This is a paid position, with full coverage under EI, CPP and WSIB. And we charge for rent and training, commensurate with experience. We have chosen this approach for clarity and fairness. Accommodation is in our walk-out basement (big windows!), with separate entrance, living/dining area, kitchen, washroom and bedroom. Access to laundry facilities.

Qualifications

  • Passion for ecological agriculture, good food and community building.
  • Awareness and curiosity for what is happening around you.
  • Prepared to take on responsibliity.
  • Ability to work fast and a desire to improve efficiency.
  • Ability to work well in a team and independently.
  • Driver’s license is an asset but not required.
  • A good attitude and sense of humour.
