Roots and Shoots Farm is a dynamic group of 12 people who run the biggest pickup-style CSA in Ottawa, while supplying grocery stores and farmers markets. After our move to a beautiful 100 acre farm in Ste Cecile de Masham, just 30 minutes from Ottawa, we are extending our field rotations, adding livestock and perennials to the mix, focussing on long-term sustainability. Would you like to be part of the development of a highly sustainable, low input, high output four-season farm? Read on!
We’re looking for three apprentices. Duties include seeding, planting, weeding, harvesting, washing and packing of vegetables, or overseeing said tasks.
What will you learn?
We will be providing a tour to 5 different local farms over the season. You will learn the ins and outs of all of our production, planning and record-keeping processes. Once per month we will offer a workshop on: Fertility, Irrigation, Tractors and Implements, Cover crops and Crop Rotations. We try to explain the task and our expectations as clearly and concisely as possible, and all staff play an important role in helping us track everything on the farm. As the season progresses there are opportunities for staff to take on specific responsibilities on the farm - i.e.managing certain crops harvest, transplant manager, irrigation manager, greenhouse seeding, etc. . .
Are you the right person for Roots and Shoots? We find the best candidates:
Why work at Roots and Shoots?
$10.75 -$12/hour, depending on experience. We work an average of 42h/week. You will get paid for all hours worked. Veggies are free (within reason). Semi-private accommodations are available on farm for rent. Wakefield and Sainte-Cecile-de-Masham are close by, where you may rent rooms/apartments.
Our farm is in the beautiful Gatineau hills only 2min from Lake Phillipe and Gatineau park and 11km from Wakefield, a vibrant community with cosy cafes, restaurants and fun local bars. There is a growing community of small farmers in this area, which makes it a fun place to network and learn. Although this is most definitely a rural area, you can really get around on a bicycle.
We share hot lunches everyday! The farm provides a kitchen and pays a staff member to cook. Employees contribute to an employee-managed grocery fund.
Our on-farm job training is comprehensive. We do like to keep employees on board from year to year, if all parties feel comfortable, so long term employment is a possibility.
