Position: Farm Coordinator
Organization: Camp Fircom

Location: Gambier Island; 20 min water taxi from Horseshoe Bay, West Vancouver, BC
Housing: Shared accommodation is supplied, and all meals are free for the duration of the season.

Term: part time in April and September and full time May – August, 2020
Salary: $145 per day
Reports To: Food Service and Farm Manager and Executive Director

Overview of Camp Fircom

Camp Fircom is located on the south-eastern tip of Gambier Island, a short water taxi ride from Horseshoe Bay, West Vancouver. The heart of the non-profit is running summer camp programs, and in addition the venue also operates a year-round retreat centre hosting weddings, conferences, work retreats, adult programs, and other groups. It is a 120-acre waterfront property which connects to kilometers of hiking trails, has three beaches and lots of recreational opportunities. The mission of Camp Fircom is to create communities of belonging and experiences to grow on.

We have a ½ acre garden and orchard and upkeep a small flock of chickens. The produce from the garden often comes into the kitchen to be used for delicious fresh food for our guests but is also sold in mini markets to guests or used in programs.

Camp Fircom is an off-the-grid location which means that all kitchen waste must be processed onsite. The staff team takes part in the responsibility of taking out the compost to the farm, cleaning and properly sorting recycling, and bagging and storing garbage so it can get it removed from the island.

Nature & Scope

The Fircom Farm Coordinator will be the “hands in the dirt”, facilitating the action on our beautiful farm. They will be tending to our crops and making sure the farm is producing delicious fresh ingredients for our dining hall which is mere steps away. You will also be involved in farm program execution and/or training for junior staff with all ages using our resource binder or sharing your own knowledge and skills.

The Fircom Farm Coordinator works collaboratively and collectively with a dynamic Fircom staff team and community. The Fircom Farm Coordinator manages duties needed on the farm, supervises sporadic volunteers, and sells the farms’ produce to rental groups and summer camps. This position reports directly to the Food Service and Farm Manager. They also help supervise and delegate tasks to a possible intern or farm assistant; based on funding availability.

Farm Duties:

  • Create Planting Plan with support from the Food & Farm Manager
  • Plant, cultivate and irrigate crops
  • Set-up water systems
  • Harvest crops, examine produce for quality and prepare for the market
  • Handling heavy loads
  • Manage compost system

Coordination Duties:

  • Train and supervise volunteers, farm staff, and program staff on farm duties, etc.
  • Keep accurate records of volunteer hours and farm tasks completed; generate program statistics, upkeep of Farm Journal
  • Manage small groups in the garden, hosting garden programming
  • Act as the public face of the organization
  • Sell produce to our rental groups as available
  • Help in other duties as needed; ex. food boat unloading

Skills & Competencies

  • Gardening experience necessary!!!
  • Demonstrated high level of self-motivation, responsibility, and organization
  • Experience and creativity around community engagement
  • Demonstrated supervisory and training skills — able to comfortably provide hands-on group and individual instructions to volunteers of diverse ages and backgrounds
  • Excellent communication skills: ability to represent Fircom to the public, and work with people from diverse backgrounds; able to identify learning opportunities in a dynamic field environment
  • Physically fit and enjoys hard work outdoors; able to work quickly and efficiently for long hours in any weather
  • Familiarity with and commitment to the vision and mission of Fircom an asset
  • Professional teaching, outdoor education, camp counselor or other leadership experience
  • Good basic computer skills, comfortable with email, word processing, and data entry

Position Details:

This job is on Gambier Island and will require you to be on site for agreed upon schedule, full-time in the summer months. The position starts in April and goes through till September with some flexibility in schedule, some possibility to have a few days in March to start seeds/planting plan.

Shared accommodation is supplied, and all meals are free for the duration of the season.

Site benefits include access to waterfront, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, hiking trails, archery range, and farm/garden. In house safety training is required for specific activities.
