Maude Island Farm is situated on a remote island, part of the famous Haida Gwaii archipelago on BC’s northern coast. We have been growing organic produce and fruit for the local market since 1994. We grow a wide variety of vegetables as well as a large crop of garlic in the field. We have a greenhouse where we grow cucumbers and tomatoes and peppers. We have been certified organic until this year. Although we haven't continued with certification we still follow certification standards.
Every year we offer a market garden training apprenticeship for one or two people. The apprentice receives a cabin and stipend of $600/month for the season from May 1 to October 15. The apprentice will learn all aspects of market gardening from planting, weeding, irrigation, plant and soil nutrition, greenhouse operation, produce preparation, record keeping and marketing. We work as a team and usually have WWOOF volunteers to help.
Other homestead skills an apprentice will learn here are chopping firewood, pickling and preserving food, smoking and canning fish, chicken husbandry, mushroom gathering and other wild edible harvests, baking bread, making kombucha, cooking and sharing meals together, etc, etc.
We are situated on the seaside so there is swimming, kayaking, hiking and seafood!
We have been teaching and sharing at our farm for 26 years and many past apprentices have gone on to start their own projects after leaving the farm. Although we work hard, we also enjoy the beautiful opportunities the location has to offer.
We work 6-7 hours per day 5 days/week (plus 2 hours on Saturday morning). Taking off occasional blocks of time for camping and exploring are encouraged.
We understand that everyone has to start somewhere, so previous experience is helpful but enthusiasm and a burning desire to learn the skills of market gardening are the most important to us. Farmwork is very physical so being in shape and liking physical work is important. Also, having a sense of humour is a total bonus.
Apprentices have their own cabin but we all share meals together and share in the cooking and cleanup of meals as well.
