The Backwoods Farm is entering its fourth season of organic abundance. Founder and farmer Jade Snow Rosen began his agricultural experience at Seven Ravens Permaculture academy in 2012 where he earned his 2 month permaculture design certificate. This experience inspired Jade and long time friend, John Muirhead to start the half acre market garden at The Backwoods. The land has transformed from a fallow field into a super productive and beautiful farm-scape. The farm now feeds 15-20 families with a community supported agriculture program and supplies the Saturday and Tuesday farmers markets. Jade's vision for the farm is to grow organic food, culture, community and foster a spirited connection to land and the farming experience. Jade loves to share his first hand farming knowledge and is patient and caring to all students.
The farm specializes in crops that earn a high value per square foot such as mixed baby greens, tomatoes, strawberries and carrots. We grow in permanent raised beds and use all organic amendments for our soil, such as: animal manure, alfalfa and work castings. We strive to feed soil organisms and leave the soil in a healthy state for future generations.
The two positions at the backwoods farm are available for a couple (preferred) or one highly motivated individual. Work hours are 6 hrs a day from Monday to Friday and, 2 Saturday's per month. The backwoods experience consists of preparing beds, planting seeds for transplants, making and moving compost, transplanting, harvesting, laying out irrigation, looking after trellised tomatoes and cucumbers, weeding, row seeding using a specialized tool, listening to great music, having worldly conversation, laughing, taking lake-dip breaks and overall enjoyment of life, changing of the seasons and making positive change for the planet and all its creatures!
