ORGANIC FARMING

Position: Organic Farm Intern
Type: paid position starting at $550.00 weekly, deductions will be made for room and board (see below)
Eligibility: ages 18-30, Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
Farm: Marvellous Edibles Farm
Location: Woodford, near Owen Sound and Collingwood, Grey County, Georgian Bay, Ontario

Marvellous Edibles Farm is looking for Organic Farm interns for summer / fall 2019 and winter 2020.  Starting June 1st  2019, ending May 30th, 2019.

Marvellous Edibles is a diverse and sustainable 100 acre farm south of the Georgian Bay. We have 10 Acres of certified Organic vegetables, fruits, cattle and poultry. We have an on farm kitchen and produce value added products.

Our philosophy is to grow what we sell.

We market most of our products at various farmers markets in Toronto and some wholesale sales.

This is a unique opportunity for candidates who are looking for a well rounded paid internship experience in full time, year round farming with a strong focus on greenhouse growing and season extension. We manage  3/4 acre under hoophouse management which we use to grow vegetables and geens year round.

Interns will be exposed to and learn:

  • seed starting, seedling care
  • crop planning with season extension in mind
  • Weed, pest, and disease management
  • Intensive vegetable farming utilizing raised beds, walk behind tractor and attachments
  • livestock and pasturing
  • cover cropping and soil care
  • season extension and greenhouse management
  • Certified Organic rules and certification
  • small scale honey production
  • Value added products in our on farm inspected kitchen.
  • Root Cellaring
  • Greens production in winter months.
  • Basic cheese and yogurt production

Hours: 8-10 hours/day and could be more on certain days such as harvest or getting ready for markets.

To qualify for this internship you must have:

  • An interest in organic farming
  • Problem solving skills.
  • The ability to work independently and with others
  • An inquisitive mind that approaches farming as a science.
  • A deep interest in food and have excellent cooking skills
  • You must be able to get up very early to go to farmers markets.
  • You must be ready to supervise our many volunteers
  • some farming experience would be an asset
  • You should be able to commit to a 1 year contract

And most importantly you must want to be a farmer. What you are applying for is  physical work often in adverse situations such as heat, cold and snow.

This is not a formal learning environment, you will work together with the farmers and/or alone. If you feel that you work better with formal teaching sessions this is not a job for you.

We encourage  candidates who will take the initiative and use our very large number of reference materials. 

In return we offer a dynamic environment in one of the most beautiful regions in Ontario, and training in farm management.  After this opportunity you will have an in depth knowledge of how to run and manage a small farm

This is a funded, paid position, in order to qualify as a candidate you must be:

  • between the ages of 18-30
  • not have participated in any other youth employment programs
  • must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident.
