ORGANIC FARMING JOBS

4 Positions: Farm workers, Animal manager, Tractor operator
Type: full-time, living accommodations available onsite
Organization: Juniper Farm
Location: near Wakefield, Quebec (30 mins north of Ottawa-Gatineau)

We have 4 positions available for the 2018 season.

The farm:

Juniper Farm is a certified organic vegetable farm business owned by us, Alex Mackay-Smith and Juniper Turgeon. We have been operating for 12 years. We offer 200+ summer and fall CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shares to our local community as well as operate an on-site farm store. We also sell to a number of Ottawa and local restaurants.

We grow a large variety of fruits and veggies on 5 acres in 15 acres of rotation on our 190 acre piece of land – a good portion of it forest. We have 5 greenhouses and a cold cellar to help extend our seasons. We have laying hens, chickens, pigs, turkeys and beehives integrated into the farm circle.

Positions

Position #1: Tractor Operator and Irrigation Manager

  • Safely operate tractor with mower, s-tine cultivator, discs, bucket, forks, spader, seed drill, rototiller
  • Ability to change, adjust and maintain implements
  • Knowledge of tractor mechanics an asset
  • Fully manage irrigation system
  • Install and monitor greenhouse and field irrigation
  • Repair and constant maintenance of irrigation system

Position #2: Animal Manager

  • Care for diverse animals on the farm, such as pigs, turkeys and chickens
  • Pick up young animals from suppliers
  • Closely monitor young animals for temperature and water needs
  • Monitor health of animals
  • Be comfortable with animal culling
  • Oversee slaughter of animals
  • Be available on slaughter day, potential longer hours
  • Monitor animal infrastructure and report needs to Infrastructure manager
  • Daily fill food and water needs for animals
  • Ensure the sanitation and cleanliness of animal materials and areas
  • Move fences, animals and shelters around pasture weekly
  • Monitor pasture health for ideal grazing
  • Keep inventory of animal materials
  • Experience driving a tractor and using forks an asset

Position #3: Field Sower and Pest control

  • Manage all direct seeded sowings
  • Be conscious of soil, moisture and seed sizes variability and it’s effect on consistent germination
  • Monitoring post-sowing germination success
  • Install and maintain hoops and row cover/protectnet on appropriate crops

Position #4: Greenhouse and Packing Assistant

  • Assist greenhouse manager in propagation all vegetable starts
  • Manage fall greenhouses
  • Assist CSA manager on harvest mornings to process and pack vegetables

Details

40-45 hours a week of labour, from mid April to mid November, depending on end-of-season weather.

There will be times of the season when we work late to finish a job. And some rotating weekend work between some staff will be expected for special events or animal care.

We expect that you take your commitment to our business seriously and will sign a contract to reflect this commitment.

We also expect that you commit to open lines of communication and that you are focused on your work during those hours.

We deeply value perseverance, diligence, and thoroughness.

We are looking for individuals to join our team as career farmers or those willing to stay for multi years. Minimum 1 season of farm experience is necessary.

Living accommodations available onsite for rent.

Vegetables available for harvest for personal consumption throughout the season.

Must be eligible to work in Canada.

We operate primarily in English however the farm environment is bi-lingual (French and English)

Pay: Minimum wage or negotiable depending on extensive experience
