Position: Organic Market Garden/Holistic Farming Internship
Type: full-time internship with rustic accom., meals, stipend, more (see below)
Organization: Arc Acres
Location: Manotick Station / Greely, rural Ottawa, Ontario
Arc Acres is offering a work-to-learn internship position for the 2017 season.
The season’s start date begins May 1 through to mid-October.
Arc Acres is situated 15 minutes south of Ottawa, in Manotick Station. Amber, the farmer behind Arc Acres is entering her 9th season, practicing organic agriculture. Arc Acres currently hosts 1 intensive acre of market garden including fruit, vegetables, herbs, and garlic. Grass fed beef, pastured pork and chickens are raised with rotational grazing methods. Permaculture, biodynamics and holistic management are practiced regularly. Arc Acres products are marketed through Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) shares and 2 local farmers markets, both rural and urban.
This labor intensive internship is intended for an individual who is interested in becoming organic farmers or want to live, learn and work on a holistic food farm for a whole season. You will live and work alongside the farmer, where you will have the opportunity to become educated in organic agriculture while receiving hands on experience.
Do you have what it takes? Serious questions to ask yourself.
I believe time, knowledge and wisdom are precious. I am looking for an individual who wants to learn to do by doing, and in exchange, work and help build Arc Acres as a model farm that will continue to share the knowledge and build the community behind it! “Leaving the planet better than what we found it!”
Our intern will have their own small cabin to live in alongside our maple bush and main garden. The cabin has no electricity, but houses a comfy bed and space to spread out and call home. A small communal cabin 10x20 has been transformed into a seasonal kitchen and deck to hang out on! Interns are expected to work 5 days a week, approximately 8 hour days. I offer a stipend of $100/week + an additional $25/week bonus after successfully finishing the season. We prepare and eat most meals together. There is access to unlimited amounts eggs, meats and vegetables from the farm. There is an outhouse and an outdoor shower.
Routines naturally work their way into our weekly schedule. Majority of the work opportunity will take place in the market garden. Fieldwork will consist of soil preparations, mulching, seeding, transplanting, irrigating, weed and pest management, harvesting, packing and distribution of weekly vegetables to farmers markets. We tend to a small greenhouse and orchard. We use a 2 wheel tractor for primary soil preparations and assorted hand tools for weeding! Daily routines involve livestock management as well. Moving temporary electric fencing, chicken tractoring, feeding and watering livestock are tasks that can be expected.
If interns want to explore their own experiments outside of the workday, I gladly offer guidance and practical supplies.
There are bicycles to use for exploring, a small pool for hot summer days and access to my farming library.
