Position: Market Gardening Leaders (various positions)

Les jardins Carya is a five-acre organic vegetable farm located in Senneville, Quebec, on the Island of Montreal.  We grow a little of everything, and a lot of field and greenhouse grown salad greens, tomatoes, and microgreens. Our focus is high-quality vegetables and amazing customer service.  We proudly supply about 30 local restaurants, cafeterias, and small grocery stores with our products year-round, and offer our fresh produce to a 150-member market-style CSA at two weekly Farmer’s Markets.  We are located a 15-minute bike ride from the waterfront college town of Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, and a 30-minute drive/train from downtown Montreal.

Market Gardening Leaders – full-time, seasonal 10-month positions (March-December 2020) 

Salary: $15-$18/hr (details below)

These positions play a crucial part in maintaining Carya’s reputation as a top quality, organic producer and contribute greatly to the long-term growth of the farm.

Paid training would ideally begin September-October 2019.

We are seeking out highly motivated, experienced Market Gardening Leaders capable of assuming any one of the following roles:

  • Harvest leader: Manages all aspects of harvest and leads harvest team.  Predicts and completes the weekly harvests and communicates with Sales and Packing leaders.
  • Propagation House and Field Seedings and Plantings / Field Crew Leader: Manages all aspects of the propagation and seedling house; completes weekly field direct seedings, and manages crew for field day tasks (cultivating, planting etc.)
  • Wash and Packhouse Leader: Manages all aspects of weekly washing and packaging, and communicates with Harvest and Sales leaders.
  • Greenhouse / High-tunnel Production Leader: Manages all aspects of in-ground high-tunnel and greenhouse plantings and maintenance. Crops include: tomatoes, eggplants, sweet peppers, basil etc.

Important note: The tasks of each leader’s role is designed to take up approximately 2-3 days of the workweek to complete.  On all other days, you will be accompanying the team to help complete another Leader’s tasks.  

PROFILE OF THE IDEAL APPLICANT:

  • Has a passion for agriculture;
  • Can communicate easily and effectively with team members;
  • Capable of leading by example, with a fair deal of HUSTLE mixed in for good measure;
  • Has a good level of experience in market gardening (2 seasons or more);
  • Experience in harvesting and conditioning for selling to markets, retail and restaurants (at least 1 season);
  • Experience in greenhouse culture management;
  • Capacity for physical work under variable weather conditions;
  • Love of working independently and in teams;
  • Willingness to learn and take on new challenges;
  • Driven to get the job done, but values work-life balance;
  • Has a valid driver's license;
  • Bilingual (French and English).

Salary: $15-$18/hr plus Performance-based bonuses.

Details of employment:

40-45hrs per week, Monday to Friday (Low-season 8am-5pm, High-season 7am-4pm, including one unpaid 1-hour lunch break daily).

All employees are expected to be available to work on our larger harvest days, Mondays and Thursdays as it stands, throughout the season, and vacation time should fall outside of High-season (May 1st- September 30th).
