Position: Vegetable Farm Field Workers & Team Lead
Organization: Fertile Ground Farm
Location: St. Agatha (Waterloo Region), Ontario

Our Farm

Fertile Ground is an organic vegetable farm operating on a beautiful 100 acre property near Waterloo, ON. Our mixed production includes 10 acres of garden (with 4 in vegetable production annually), pastured layers, 40 acres hay, and honeybees. Since building relationships with the people we feed is really important to us, most of our produce is sold through our 250 member CSA (Community Shared Agriculture), supplemented by some local restaurant & retail sales. We have 2 seedling greenhouses and 1 tomato tunnel. 2 Farmall tractors are used for primary and in-row cultivation. Our team includes 4-5 full time seasonal workers. While the landscape is very rural, we are a mere 10 minute drive from the west edge of the city of Waterloo.

Requirements & Responsibilities

Applicants should have at least 1 (and preferably more) full season's experience on a vegetable farm, efficient field skills and great stamina. Must have quick hands, positive attitude, strong observation skills and ability to see tasks through start to finish. Tractor experience and skill with tools & equipment are valuable assets. Expect the work to be physically and mentally demanding, with long hours outdoors in all weather. Strong back and knees are essential as the work involves plenty of lifting, bending, crouching and kneeling. Most tasks require quality work at a quick pace, often under pressure:

  • Planting, weeding, harvesting and washing/packing vegetables
    • Lift and carry 40-50lb bins regularly
  • pest control & irrigation
  • greenhouse and high tunnel work
  • poultry chores
  • possible tractor work if appropriate
  • customer service at CSA distribution weekly June-Oct

Additional Team Lead Requirements & Responsibilities:

In addition to efficient field skills, the Team Lead must have demonstrated small team leadership experience facilitating a positive and productive work environment. The ability to delegate and effectively keep track of people, time, tasks and systems is key. Working closely with the lead farmer, the Team Lead will develop responsibility for managing and inspiring the work crew in the field, including problem-solving, doing quality control, and generally ensuring that harvest, post-production handling, poultry care, and maintenance systems are maintained.

Hours & Remuneration

40-50 hr/wk Mon-Fri, typically 6am-4pm June-Oct. Occasional evening and weekend work for chores and special events. Additional benefits: 1 wk holidays, 2 off-farm learning days for professional development, plenty of vegetables for personal consumption.

Field Workers: $14-15/hr, 6-7mth contract mid-April to mid-Nov

Team Lead: $16-18/hr, 7.5mth contract April to mid-Nov

As our team is small and everyone is essential, commitment to a full season of work is important.
