ORGANIC GROWING

Position: Organic Grower
Farm: Glasrai
Location: Co.Mayo, Ireland
Term: full-time, beginning Feb/March 2020
Housing: can be included if needed

Dear growers/ landworkers/ farmers/ hard sloggers who are excited by ecological growing AND love thinking around challenges AND want a big adventure in a new country….

We are looking for someone to join our dynamic team at Glasraí. We are offering a full time job 35-40 hours weekly from February/March. For someone with enough experience there is tons of potential for a long term partnership.

Glasraí is a thriving vegetable growing enterprise in its 4th year. We are in organic conversion and will be certified next year. Aoife and Joe met on an organic horticulture course years ago and embarked on this adventure. We are based near Hollymount, Co.Mayo. We now have two young children who are very much a part of the farm. Our farm is on 7 acres, 4.5 of which are currently under production. We have three large polytunnels, two small glasshouses and a large packing and storage shed.

We also do social farming on the farm so expect to meet lots of interesting people with different experiences and levels of ability. Our local primary school is also getting involved in the farm this year.

We do our best to farm as sustainably as possible while growing a sustainable livelihood for ourselves and our team. We use green manures, grow native hedgerows, encourage biodiversity, experiment with biodynamic practices, aim for minimal tillage. Next year we are hoping to be completely no-dig in our polytunnels and ¼ acre leaf growing area. We are very interested in composts and use some biodynamic preparations on the farm.

Other projects for the coming year include preparing for orchard establishment, putting up a new polytunnel, working out our no dig system and as usual lots of interesting projects that pop up every year.

Our markets are three restaurants, two farmers markets, a veggie box scheme of around 40 people and some supermarkets during the summer.

This job offers lots of potential to the RIGHT candidate. We are currently open to applications or discussions with interested people. We really want someone with experience on a commercial horticulture farm. Someone looking to take responsibility for certain projects and bringing new ideas to the farm. Wages to be discussed depending on experience. Accommodation can be included if needed.

In addition to general enthusiasm, the following personal attributes are required:

  • Practical experience of veg-growing on a commercial scale
  • Commitment to and/or interest in organic/agroecological principles
  • A decent level of fitness and a willingness to perform physical work in all weathers.
  • Ability to follow complex instructions and work efficiently, with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team (including some supervising of WWOOFers in the summer months)
  • Also ability to work by yourself and take initiative
  • Full driving licence and willingness to make regular deliveries (no more than a few hours a week on average)
  • Enthusiasm for shared living and willingness to be involved in preparing shared meals at least some of the time

Feel free to have a nosy at our facebook page.
