Internship + Summer Job

Position: Schoolyard Farm SOYL Facilitator – Vancouver, Suwa’lkh, and Farm Roots Editions
Organization: Fresh Roots
Location: South and east Vancouver, Delta, or Coquitlam
Application Deadline: November 23, 2018

Good Food for All

Everyone should have access to healthy food, soil, and community. Fresh Roots enacts this vision by cultivating engaging gardens and programs that catalyze healthy eating, ecological stewardship, and community celebration. Fresh Roots stewards 1/2-acre market gardens on school grounds across the lower mainland. Its fields produce good food for the community, empower youth through vocational skills development, and serve as hands-on outdoor classrooms for over 5000 students each year.

Fresh Roots’ Vancouver, Suwa’lkh, and Farm Roots SOYL programs hire diverse high school youth each summer to grow themselves and good food. Over the course of this unique summer leadership and employment program, youth gain skills in growing, cooking and selling food, as well as a greater connection to themselves, their community and their local food system.

The Position

As a SOYL facilitator, you’ll work as a team to inspire and engage youth by supporting youth recruitment and selection, developing program activities, assisting with logistics and communication and delivering the program itself. If you’re passionate about working with teens and cultivating personal growth and community leadership through farming, this could be the job for you!

Internship credit is available through UBC’s Career Development Internship course (LFS 496) for 6 credits, a UBC directed studies program, or Kwantlen’s AGRI 4295. Credit options may be available for other programs as well. Receiving credit is not a requirement of the internship program. This position will continue as a paid Canada Summer Jobs position for May through August.

The Editions

The original home of SOYL, our Vancouver program hires around 30 youth each summer from around Vancouver. The action happens on our schoolyard farms in East and South Vancouver, and at Vancouver Farmer’s markets. Learn more at

Our newest edition, the SOYL @ Suwa’lkh program hires 15 high school youth each summer to grow themselves and good food. SOYL @ Suwa’lkh works closely with indigenous youth to re-indigenize the school food system: learning about traditional medicines; stewarding a 7-acre forest; and supporting youth to build capacity and learning experientially. Indigenous students are strongly encouraged to apply. Learn more about our partnership with Suwa’lkh at

Farm Roots
In its second year, the SOYL@ Farm Roots program will work primarily with our sites in Delta in partnership with Farm Roots. Learn more at:
