Position: Farm Worker on sustainable urban vegetable farm

About Capital Greens Urban Farm

Capital Greens is a multi-locational, small-scale, diversified organic vegetable farm located in Ottawa, ON. Gardens are located on 5 urban properties in the City, as well as a larger farm plot at the Just Food Farm in Blackburn Hamlet. The farm produces a variety of organically grown vegetables for sale at the Lansdowne Farmer’s Market, for several restaurants, and also specializes in selling an array of baby leafy greens and salad mixes to several grocery stores.

Job Description

Under the supervision of the farm owner/manager, employees will help grow and sell an array of high quality vegetables and herbs using sustainable and organic methods. Employees will participate in all aspects of commercial vegetable production, including:

Harvest: harvesting, washing and packaging produce

Nursery: preparing growing media, seeding, potting up, and general seedling care

Field work: soil preparation, seeding, transplanting, weeding, irrigating, pest monitoring/control, property maintenance, infrastructure improvements

Marketing: selling at the farmer’s market, delivering to grocery and restaurant clients, posting on social media

Admin: record keeping, crop planning

  • attention to detail
  • good work ethic and integrity
  • physically fit and able to work in in any weather conditions
  • enthusiasm and a positive attitude
  • good communication and customer service skills
  • driver’s license
  • previous work experience on a farm is an asset
  • owning a vehicle is an asset


Start Date/End Date: late April — late October

Hours: ~30-40 hours/week (5-6 days/week, including Sunday farmer’s market)

Wage: based on experience, starting at $14/hour, with opportunity for performance-based bonuses
