RESEARCH ASSISTANT

Position: Research Assistant
Organization: Open Food Network Canada
Location: anywhere in Ontario — on-line meetings

OFN-Canada is working on a research project funded by the OMAFRA New Directions research project. The project explores how digital platforms are adding value for small and medium scale farmers in Ontario.

We are looking for a graduate level RA to join the project for fall 2020, and possibly winter 2021. This is a great opportunity for a student exploring digitization of food systems, particularly with a focus on Alternative Food Networks, short-chain or direct-to-consumer chains, and Community Food Initiatives. To date, our research has included surveys and interviews with small and mid scale farms in Ontario regarding their digital tech challenges and opportunities. We are currently completing an associated set of case studies, and a framework to help understand the small-farm digital tech landscape and 'disruptive' digital technology in Ontario.

Key activities remaining for fall 2020 include organizing several face-to-face and/or digital meetings with small and mid scale farmers, and other stakeholders to:

  1. share discuss our preliminary findings
  2. gather input about forward-leaning policies and programs that will help policy makers shape diffusion of digital technology in the small and mid-size farming sector

Please see this brief overview of our project.

Our RA stipend is approximately $6,000/term

To apply — please email us, info@openfoodnetwork.ca your resume/CV before July 15 (earlier is even better). Please include:

1. a description of your previous practical work with 'alternative' food sytems and/or small/mid scale farmers

2. an overview of your current research/academic interests, and

3. a preliminary idea of how you would organize a series of policy-focused workshops in this sector.
