Location: Winchester, Ontario (30 minutes south of Ottawa)
Against the Grain Farms of Winchester is focused on re-building the grain commerce of Eastern Ontario by establishing heritage wheat's and barleys from around the world. We concentrate on growing non-gmo heritage varieites of corn, wheat and barley for human consumption. We sell our grains/flour wholesale to large bakeries, chefs, distiller's as well as farmer's markets and stores.
We are looking for 1-2 interns with an interest to learn and be involved in all areas of the farm operation and/or someone with experience looking to further their knowledge and take on the responsibility to assist in the management of daily operations. We have farm tours and groups interested to learn more about our work with heritage grains, and our ecological farming practises including pollinator project, native tree plantations and participatory plant breeding in conjuction with Canadian University. Intern would be responsible for helping to track data on varietals of grains, maintenance of grain plots, harvest, seed cleaning. Participation in organizing and running farm tours, and events. Also would be required to help at farmers market to sell retail packages of grain/flour. CSA grain share baskets to be prepared monthly and delivered to depots.
On farm accommodation/meals available with weekly stipend or negotiated pay based on experience. We are also open to partnerships and can offer self motivated individuals the opportunity to develop their own complementing farm enterprise.
A full season commitment (May-October) is preferred. However, we are willing to work out other arrangements. Most importantly, we require people who are strong in mind, body, spirit and who are able to work cooperatively and independently.
