Nature & Scope:

YMCA Cedar Glen Outdoor Centre is a year round operation, opened 7 days a week, which delivers outdoor education programs to school groups, youth and adult retreats, a day camp and an overnight camp focused on leadership development during the summer months. The centre also operates a 4 acre organic vegetable farm with Harvest Share programs, Farm Camps, and a farm stand.

Reporting to the Farm Team Leader, the Farm Camp Floater carries out the day to day organization of Farm Camps on our organic vegetable farm. The position provides support in delivering the highest quality farm education to camp participants that align with the overall mission, vision and values of the YMCA.

Farm Camp Floaters play an essential role in the planning and implementation of all seven farm camp programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Supports Farm Camp all programming on the farm. Maintains the kids’ gardens to insure productivity and learning opportunities throughout the growing season.
  • Delivers safe and high quality farm camp programs meeting the expectations of each of seven farm camp program.
  • Responsible for group coverage of campers aged 6-12 at the farm by delivering high quality programs, and covering staff breaks and communicating with the Day Camp senior staff team.
  • Supports counselors with challenging groups and behavioral campers on the farm.
  • Attends all Farm staff meetings and Summer Day Camp meetings, pre-camp and in-camp staff trainings.
  • Acts as a positive role model for children, youth, and fellow staff.
  • Participates enthusiastically with campers in all activities including daily programs, special events, theme days and swimming
  • Ensures all programs are in line with YMCA Policies and Procedures, Healthy Childhood development, OCA guidelines, High 5 Standards and program module outlines
  • Responsible for the supervision and safety of campers aged 6 – 12; providing opportunities for each child individual child to experience success
  • Shares with the staff team the duties of ensuring the camp site is clean, organized, and safe; ensuring Health and Safety procedures are being followed
  • Models appropriate behaviors to staff in line with the Mission, Vision and Values of the YMCA of Greater Toronto
  • Represents the YMCA in a professional manner; establishes rapport and maintains effective relationships with all staff, members and community partners
  • Understands the legal responsibilities and moral imperative to report suspected child abuse to Child Protection Services.
  • Understands the importance of the volunteer staff partnership and integrates the value of philanthropy and volunteerism in dealings with members, volunteers, donors and staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of organic agriculture, gardening, cooking, or a related field
  • Minimum 1 full season as a camp counselor in an outdoor setting
  • Shows leadership in organizing educational activities and garden tasks
  • Successful candidates must be child focused, enthusiastic and committed to delivering safe, fun and engaging camp programs.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Must have a personal arrangement to commute to site. YMCA Cedar Glen Outdoor Centre is not accessible by public transit
  • Able to routinely perform hard repetitive physical labour on a regular basis
  • Ability to use frequent light to medium physical effort: lifting up to 20 kg (44 lbs.), bending and stooping
  • Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members, staff and volunteers
  • Must be flexible and adaptable
  • Commitment to working in a socially inclusive environment responding with sensitivity and personal awareness to the diverse needs of members including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity
