Position: Volunteer Coordinator - Canada Summer Jobs

The Richmond Food Bank is looking for a dynamic, hard-working, caring and compassionate individual to join our team as a Volunteer Coordinator.

About the Organization:

The Richmond Food Bank Society supports food security and nourishment needed to sustain health and well-being. Each week our volunteers offer an array of fresh produce and other grocery items five days per week to around 1400 individuals. We also support a School Meal program to address hunger among students, Home Delivery program, and Information services to connect people in need with community resources (virtually, during the COVID-19 emergency response).

The Richmond Food Bank is also a sharing hub for food and supplies to community meals, shelters, and other social service agencies that serve low-income and marginalized people in our city.

Job Overview:

Reporting to the Manager of Volunteer Operations, the Volunteer Coordinator will assist in greeting volunteers, assigning tasks and ensuring all necessary supplies are available. In addition, this position will also support the operations of the Richmond Food Bank as a whole, including grocery distribution (giving out groceries to clients).

Compensation: $15/hour

Schedule and Hours:

This is a fixed-term 16 week position (with a possibility of extension) at 20 hours per week. The anticipated start date is May 25th until September 11th.

Work hours are normally 10:00AM – 2:00PM, Monday through Thursday & Saturdays, though this schedule may be adjusted as needed (to be discussed during interviews). Hours of operation at the Richmond Food Bank are 9am – 3pm Monday – Saturday, so hours of work will fall within those times.

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations

In addition, a police information check (criminal record check) will be required.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • compassionate and caring; must treat everyone with respect
  • Ability to work with different personalities and age groups
  • must be able to lift up to 30lbs and use safe lifting practices
  • must value social justice
  • strong verbal communication skills
  • strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people (staff, volunteers, neighbours/clients)
  • ability to practice good judgement and to work independently
  • experience working with volunteers an asset

Training and supervision provided: The Manager of Volunteer Operations will be responsible for supervising and overseeing the training of the employee. Actual training will include shadowing of various staff and experienced volunteers on-site, as well as regular check-in meetings with the Executive Director to set and monitor goals and performance.
