Position: Community Garden Education Assistant
Type: summer job / age 30 & under
Organization: Halton Food Council
Location: Burlington/Halton Region, Ontario

The Halton Food Council (HFC) is an independent, volunteer-based non-profit organization representing a broad range of sectors and interests across the food system in Halton Region. Our mission is to promote and support a sustainable local food system and to inspire people into action.

Our “Growing Together” project focuses on building a sense of community around food gardens, reducing isolation of vulnerable populations while also building food literacy skills. We support 9 community gardens with regular programming for youth, families, and seniors (depending on location). We are looking for a dynamic individual interested in urban agriculture and building community gardens.

Responsibilities for the Community Garden Education Assistant:

  • Assist with planting, maintaining, harvesting and leading community garden programs

  • Engage in outreach activities to encourage participation by community members

  • Track garden related program statistics by recording program participation metrics

  • Maintain effective communication between volunteers, community members, partners

  • Prepare bi-weekly update reports for the HFC

  • Occasionally act as a representative of the HFC at community garden outreach events (Farmers Markets or community events)

  • Provide assistance and report to the Education and Community Garden Coordinator

Skills and Qualifications

  • Between 15 – 30 years of age

  • Legally entitled to work in Canada (must have a valid Social Insurance Number)

  • A minimum of one year’s related garden and educational experience (training will be provided)

  • Strong team building skills and experience mentoring youth

  • Physically able to perform some manual labour including weeding, planting vegetables, and moving tables in a variety of weather conditions

  • Familiarity with Halton Region an asset

Mandatory Requirements

  • Successful candidates 18+ will require a Police Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening before beginning employment. These checks typically take 4-6 weeks to complete. It is suggested to begin the check if intending to apply for this position.

  • Regular access to the use of a vehicle for transporting garden supplies, program materials and travel within Halton Region. Additional insurance may be required at the cost of the applicant.

  • Availability to work flexible shifts including weekdays, evenings and occasional Saturdays (markets and outreach events)
