$15 an hour / 30 hrs per week / From June 8th to Labour Day

Garden at Kimbourne is seeking a Garden Assistant to be a part of our mission to grow food and grow community in East Toronto using environmentally responsible permaculture methods.


  • Leads and support volunteers, including children, youth, adults and seniors, in planting, maintenance and harvesting of food.
  • Facilitates physically-distant gardening for members throughout the week, maintaining stations for hand hygiene and glove exchange.
  • Disinfects tools and surfaces in compliance with guidelines set out for community gardens by Toronto Public Heath and Sustain Ontario Community Growing Network.
  • Works with the Garden at Kimbourne Planning Committee to plan and execute online events and social media outreach.
  • Communicates with other area garden, social justice and neighbourhood organizations via email and social media to foster new connections.
  • Fosters community engagement and environmental awareness online through preparation and production of Garden at Kimbourne e-newsletter, blog and social media.
  • Practices close observation of the garden and maintain garden log and records by taking regular notes of patterns and changes; mentor and instruct volunteers in permaculture observation strategies.
  • Responding to observations of the garden, assists the Coordinators in developing and sharing task lists for volunteers.
  • Assists with promotion and execution of online special events

NOTE: Applicants must be between the ages of 15 and 30 and meet eligibility criteria for the 2019 Canada Summer Jobs program. Preference will be given to applicants who are enrolled in or have completed a post-secondary program with a focus on: horticulture, agriculture, botany, agrology, environmental studies, food studies, etc. Students in other fields and high school students who have gardening knowledge and experience and interest in community gardening may also be favourably considered.

Hours will be divided between at-home communications work and on-site hands-on work.
