Position: Local Food Retail Sales Associate
Type: summer job / age 30 & under 
Organization: 20 Valley Harvest Farms
Location: Jordan Station, near St Catharines, Niagara Region, Ontario

During harvest, youth will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of and weekday management of an on-farm pick-your-own operation and fruit and vegetable farm stand.

Applications must be under 30 years old at start of employment as per Canada Summer Jobs Funding requirements (details below).

This job will give youth first-hand experience working in small-scale agri-business and with a focus on agricultural retail sales. There may also be opportunities to assist at a local farmers' market or second farm location.

Youth will be selling direct to consumers, including up-selling, provide customer service, educating customers on local produce and farming and providing orientation sessions for customers (often in small groups).

Duties may also include general farm work such as harvesting, sorting, and packing fruit and vegetables; organizing and filling orders, managing inventory and sales records; crop maintenance; landscape maintenance; minor maintenance and repairs; general organizing; open/close market stands; produce delivery.

  • Outgoing and friendly personality
  • Experience working in fast paced environments
  • Willing to work outdoors (often under a 10 x 20 tent)
  • Available weekends in July
  • Customer service experience an asset
  • Second language is an asset, especially Farsi, Punjabi, Vietnamese, Filipino, Cantonese or Mandarin.

Job offer is pending Canada Summer Jobs funding, therefore applicants must meet CSJ criteria:

To be eligible, youth must:

  1. be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  2. be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment. Please note that international students do not qualify, even if legally entitled to work in Canada.
  3. have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

Pay is $15/hour; summer contract is up to 240 hours,  July and August.
