Job Title: Full-Time Farm-to-Table Associate
Type: summer job / age 30 & under (9 weeks)

Location: Greenwood & Gerrard, East End Toronto, Ontario

Riverdale Immigrant Women’s Centre (RIWC) is a non-profit community-based immigrant women’s organization committed to the empowerment of women.

Riverdale Hub is a unique, holistic community space in Little India with a vegan/vegetarian café, co-working space, event rental and studio spaces, and an organic rooftop garden.

We’re looking for an energetic go-getter with a passion for healthy, local food to fill the full-time role of Farm-to-Table Associate.

Part barista, part rooftop organic farmer, and part community organizer, this role is perfect for an extrovert with a strong social justice focus who thrives when wearing many hats. The ideal candidate has considerable café experience and knowledge of organic rooftop gardening. A positive attitude and customer service focus are a must.



  • Assist in the preparation of high quality traditional espresso-based beverages
  • Assist in food prep, baking, and catering prep as needed
  • Assist in the development and costing of seasonal menus based on what is plentiful hyper-locally
  • Cash Handling - Touch Bistro experience needed
  • Customer Service - engage with customers on a personal level
  • Assist in the promotion of the café on social media
  • Support catering events

Rooftop Garden:

  • Assist in the creation and execution of succession planting schedules to maximize yield
  • Assist in the coordination of crop choices based on café needs and what is culturally appropriate for the community
  • Assist in placing seed orders, maintaining seed library, and starting and caring for seedlings
  • Assist in weeding, watering, pruning, disease treatment and prevention, and applying natural pesticide solutions

Program Logistics:

  • Organize workshops focused on gardening, health, and wellness
  • Assist in performing outreach to relevant organizations and maintaining workshop schedule
  • Assist in the facilitation of gardening sessions with WIG program participants
  • Assist with program marketing and communications as assigned


  • The candidate must be between the ages of 15 to 30 at the start of employment
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada; International Students are not eligible to apply due to Canada Summer Jobs 2019 funding agreement


  • Customer service experience and a friendly, outgoing personality
  • Experience preparing food and coffee in a food service setting
  • Baking skill, ideally with vegan baked goods
  • A Food Handler’s Certificate or willingness to obtain one before the start date
  • Interest in or knowledge of gardening
  • Experience working with diverse and/or marginalized communities, preferably from an anti-oppression framework
  • Strong commitment to social justice and equality
  • A flexible, can-do attitude and desire to take on a leadership role
  • Skilled in the use of the MS Office Suite, Google Docs, and social media platforms
  • Flexible schedule, with the ability to work evenings and weekends as required
  • Must be able to speak Hindi/Urdu and/or Punjabi
  • Post-secondary education or training in horticulture, environmental studies, hospitality, or other relevant field
