The St James Town Community Co-op (SJTCC) aims to enable community projects and social enterprises that benefit the residents of St James Town and improve the quality of life in the community. The primary focus is food security and resilience to climate change.

It is a social enterprise co-op established to bring together organizations and individuals who can assist and support the development of projects and enterprises initiated by and for residents. The co-op uses a time bank system to document the value members’ contributions and promote exchange of services among members using time credits earned by volunteering for the co-op and related projects, as well as by providing services to other members of the co-op and the time bank.

The co-op engages and develops local skills, experience and talent to collaborate in creating jobs and life opportunities for its members.

Job description

Note: This position is part of the Canada Summer Jobs program for youth age 15-30 years old. Employment is full-time (35 hours/week) for 8 weeks.

Seeking an outgoing individual to help animate and boost our community co-operative through outreach and marketing. The St. James Town Co-op is a community-based democratically owned co-op in St. James Town that focuses on sustainable development in the neighbourhood, with particular interest in food security. We have an active and growing garden and bulk food buying club, and are in negotiations with the city to begin a larger food hub that grows and processes organic year-round food in the neighbourhood. This food hub will address food at various stages from growing food to turning food waste into energy.

Your role will be focused on getting the word out there to recruit volunteers and co-operative members as well as to increase awareness of the project in the neighbourhood and beyond. You will be a part of a two-person team and supported by member-owners of the St. James Town Co-op.

Responsibilities:

  • Creative outreach that gets the word out to the neighbourhood while staying safe
  • Community newsletter with member generated recipes, information, art
  • Temporary street art/information sites
  • Growing bulk food buying club membership and garden engagement
  • Increasing awareness of co-op and food hub goals in the neighbourhood
  • Online Promotion and content release/engagement e.g. cooking videos, podcasts, art, and information compiled and created by co-op members
  • Creating promotional material for online and physical spaces

Requirements:

  • Young Person 15-30 years old (federal grant requirements)
  • Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Preference Given to St. James Town Residents
