Good Food For All

Everyone should have access to healthy food, soil, and community. We enact this vision by cultivating engaging gardens and programs that catalyze healthy eating, ecological stewardship, and community celebration. Fresh Roots stewards 1/2 acre market gardens on school grounds across the lower mainland. Our fields produce good food for the community, empower youth through vocational skills development, and serve as hands-on outdoor classrooms for over 5000 students each year. Fresh Roots is blooming - we have so many great programs on the go we are looking for new team members to help us grow more food and engage more kids and youth in growing and eating good food!

Good Food, Youth Empowerment and Experiential Learning are Fresh Roots’ core programmatic pillars. You will work with the Good Food team to support our educational farms towards our production, sales and educational goals, helping make our farm spaces the best examples of educational farms on school grounds in the world!

The Position

If you love seeing food you grew from seed go into the hands of customers, organizing teams, and working to create a bridge between youth and the ecological world, this is the position for you! Through this role you will:

  • Lead our Saturday farmer’s markets.
  • Lead the organization and upkeep of our walk-in cooler.
  • Assist with our Wednesday CSA pickup and pop up market.
  • Lead and teach youth at market: to handle produce and money, promote sales, and share Fresh Root’s mission with the public.
  • Assist the Farm Managers in growing Good Food on school grounds: crop production, field maintenance, and harvesting.

Qualifications

  • You have experience leading teams of peers and youth and enjoy being around youth.
  • Your friends might say that you’re a natural salesperson, experience running a farmer’s market stand is an asset.
  • You love food, and you have experience in farming and gardening.
  • Able to work physically: lifting, bending, squatting, and moving.
  • Team player with patience and a sense of humour.
  • You have experience driving, a plus if you have experience driving oversized vehicles
  • You have a gift for the gab — you love talking to people, sharing new recipes, stories from the farm and stories about you!

Position Details and Requirements

  • Must meet Canada Summer Jobs Requirements.
  • BC Driver’s License Type 5
  • Schedule: the season is April 15 through October 15, Tuesday-Saturday
  • $16.50 - $18.00/hr DOE, and pending confirmation of funding
  • Must be able to pass a criminal record check
