Farm worker position on organic haskap orchard/homestead – May 11 to August 29, 2020
We are looking for help this season in our organic haskap orchard and across our homestead. If you are hardworking, enjoy being outdoors and are interested in organic and regenerative agriculture – we invite you to join our team this summer!
Sweet Earth Farm is a small family-owned farm with a 10-acre organic & biological haskap orchard and mixed pastured livestock (chickens, pigs and cows) in West Earltown, NS (1/2 hour north of Truro). As much as practical, we implement regenerative agriculture methods, including rotational grazing, living mulch, low/no-till, etc. The farm comprises about 65 acres of pasture and 120 acres of woodlot, with trails, brooks/river and beautiful scenery.
We need to hire one full-time seasonal employee to work with us in our orchard and to assist with livestock management. You will be working alongside our existing full-time employee and the two farm owners, Joe and Stephanie.
Candidates must be Canadian citizens and be 30 years old or younger. No exceptions. Preference will be given to those with farming experience.
Job Description: The Farm Worker will be working primarily in our haskap orchard. Training will be provided, as needed. Tasks will include:
You must be content to work outside for all of each day, regardless of weather conditions and must be reasonably fit as you will be required to move for much of the day, including squatting, reaching, bending, kneeling, lifting, etc. You must be a hard worker and willing to work long days, if needed. You must be a team player, but also be content to work alone, depending upon the task. You must also value healthy, nutritious and delicious food!
No smokers please.
Compensation: $12.55/hr; average 35 hrs/week, minimum (there is opportunity to work more than 40 hrs/week during peak periods, typically in June and July).
Housing: We have a spare room downstairs in our home, that includes a twin bed, table and clothing storage. Typically, we charge nominal rent for this room and invite you to join us for meals in exchange for help with daily chores caring for our livestock. Alternatively, candidate may secure housing off farm.
Time Commitments: Position is available from May 11 to August 29, 2020 (16 weeks). Typically, our employees work Monday to Saturday and have Sunday off, but this is often flexible and also dependent on weather conditions and tasks that need to be accomplished.
Opportunities: There may be an opportunity to continue living and/or working at Sweet Earth Farm beyond August 29, if there is mutual interest.
