Organic Council — Canada Summer Jobs (4 Positions)

Titles: Policy and Research Intern (1), Data Collection and Analysis Assistant (1), Membership Outreach and Events Assistant (1); and Communications and Food Education Assistant (1)

Positions: 4

Hours: Part-time to full-time hours. Max. 35 hours a week with a total of 280 hours over 8-12 weeks.

Contract: Negotiable start and end dates starting as early as June 4th

Pay: $14-$18/hour, negotiable pending experience


Applicants must be:

  • (a) between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
  • (b) a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act*; and
  • (c) legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.

About the Organic Council of Ontario:

The Organic Council of Ontario (OCO) is the Voice for Organics in Ontario. We represent over 1100 certified organic operators, as well as the businesses, organizations, and individuals that bring food from farm to plate. We work to incite sector growth, support research, improve training, increase data collection, encourage market development, protect the integrity of organic claims, and inform the public of the benefits and requirements of organic agriculture.

About the Job:

The Organic Council of Ontario is looking for four motivated summer students to join our team for the summer months at the Centre for Social Innovation (Annex) location. There is a great deal of flexibility in the job descriptions depending on what skills and experience our applicants bring, but the general descriptions for each position include:

Policy and Research

The policy research intern will assist with the collection and analysis of research on issues pertaining to organic agriculture including, but not limited to, organic inputs approval processes and databases in other jurisdictions, transition supports and mentorship programs in other jurisdictions, voluntary carbon protocols for agriculture, data collection and databases in other jurisdictions, and transition support programs in other jurisdictions.

  • Quick, efficient and organized researcher

  • Ability to distill complex subjects into accurate and engaging writing materials

  • Strong interest in the organic standards and regulations (legal outlook)

Data Collection and Analysis

This student will be responsible for collecting member information improving our Ontario Organic Directory, assisting with OCO's data strategy by helping with the collection and analysis of member data, assisting in the design of a data management system (e.g. organic prices, production numbers etc.) and conducting member outreach to fill in data gaps. They will also be responsible for monitoring and improving our google analytics and communications monitoring.

  • Ability to work with and interpret numbers

  • Deep familiarity, ease and efficiency with excel and Google sheets

  • Some understanding of agricultural economics an asset

Membership Outreach and Events

This student will be tasked with developing and managing member outreach events throughout the course of the summer. In addition to common responsibilities (e.g. researching and writing blogs, member phone calls and intake, social media and enews assistance), this student would specifically be in charge of organizing and promoting tours to member businesses including farms, processors, and retailers. They would also coordinate the logistics for a member event showcasing organic food businesses to consumer and retailers in Toronto. Finally, they would be responsible for promoting and recruiting vendors for OCO’s online marketplace.

  • Excellent writing and research skills

  • Experience with Social Media

  • Experience with Event Planning

  • Graphic design skills (e.g. Canva or In Design experience)

Communications and Food Education Assistant

This position will focus on member relations and communications. They will be tasked with improving the OCO website, increasing our graphic assets, documenting events and members, as well as improving our overall relations with members (organizing member outreach communications, mail-outs etc.) They will also focus on creating more public education materials explaining how organic agriculture benefits people, animals and the planet. This student will focus on research, communications and events that help build food literacy, increasing consumer knowledge on specific issues (for example, antibiotic use in livestock).

Specific Skills Required:

  • Excellent writing and research skills (ability to communicate technical information to broad audiences).

  • Experience with Social Media

  • Experience with Event Planning

  • Graphic design skills (e.g. Canva or In Design experience)

Ideal Candidates possess some combination of the following skills and experiences:

  • Highly motivated, can work independently and in a team;

  • Passionate and knowledgeable about local food systems and organic agriculture;

  • Comfortable making cold calls and relating to people from diverse backgrounds;

  • Interest in and/or experience with marketing;

  • Experience with Wordpress and/or other website management tools;

  • Experience working with Mailchimp or similar newsletter applications;

  • Experience managing multiple social media channels simultaneously including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram;

  • Experience managing and/or executing complex events;

  • Experience with contact management and/or online directory tools;

  • Strong written communications skills and an eye for design;

  • Familiarity with cloud file storage and sharing systems;

  • Experience with keeping detailed interview notes, tracking and managing data;

  • Access to a personal laptop and/or cell phone;

  • French language skills an asset.
