Position: Community Food Leader

Community Food Leader

The primary role of this job is to prepare and deliver healthy meals to children aged 7-16 who attend free or subsidized summer camp. The person in this role will be responsible for co-leading the summerlunch+ summer students in the daily food preparation, as well as demonstrating hands-on leadership. They will also oversee menu planning, food sourcing and ordering, managing camper’s dietary requirements, and ensuring quality, timely delivery of lunches daily to 80 children and youth who are newcomers, visible minorities and people living in food insecure communities.

Principal responsibilities, in conjunction with Managing Director of summerlunch+ include:

  • Prepare meals every day for the amazing children who attend local summer camps. This includes planning the menu and preparing food for campers.
  • Deliver, through the lunch program, food literacy lessons to teach campers about their meals and the value of healthy eating
  • Plan weekly menus for each week of this 8 week camp program, integrating food provided through Second Harvest’s food rescue service
  • Be the direct contact with the Second Harvest deliveries and manage rescued food inventory
  • Source healthy food, using local food wherever possible; build relationships with food suppliers, farmers, and in-kind providers
  • Providing direction and oversight of the local, urban garden, while using the freshly grown food for meals and literacy programming
  • Manage ordering, inventory, and preparation of food with a strong view to reducing waste in food and financial resources
  • Maintain accurate accounting and inventory of purchases, donations and food supplies
  • Support social media presence and take beautiful photos of food as it’s prepared, served and eaten
  • Support community-based projects and public awareness programming

The candidate for this role needs to have experience and/or education in the culinary field. Ideally, you will have lead a kitchen and prepared meals for large groups.
