Position: SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE AND FOOD SYSTEMS

Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) invites applications for a full time regular faculty position in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems. Areas of expertise appropriate for this position include but are not limited to agroecology and cropping/farm systems, market crop production, soils and soil management, forage and pasture management, farm business management, and integrated small animal production. A generalist with strong farming knowledge and skill is preferred. This position is located in Richmond, BC.

Kwantlen Polytechnic University, originally established by the government of British Columbia in 1981 as a College, was designated a university in 2009. Southwest British Columbia and the province on the whole is one of Canada’s most important and productive agricultural areas. Greater Vancouver is Canada’s second largest metropolis. The University offers bachelor's degrees, associate degrees, diplomas, certificates and citations in over 135 programs. It is envisaged that Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems will constitute a signature program of the new polytechnic. In September, 2012 the Bachelor of Applied Science- Sustainable Agriculture degree was launched. Unique in North America, it is focused on small scale, low input, ecologically sound, alternate market farming and emphasizes experiential education on a teaching farm. The faculty will teach classes in the agriculture degree program and work with the Institute for Sustainable Food Systems (http://www.kpu.ca/isfs), an affiliated applied research and outreach unit. A diverse team of agriculturists, economists, ecologists, planners and social scientists push the boundaries of food systems research through multifaceted community and regional projects in western Canada. Applied research engages students, community and the food and farming sector at all stages, bringing together powerful partnerships in discovery and learning.

Through a multidisciplinary, integrated approach KPU’s Sustainable Agriculture & Food Systems programs are committed to providing resources through research and teaching and facilitating collaboration, learning and innovation to advance sustainable food systems as an integral and foundational element of sustainable communities. Additionally the University is in the process of establishing research and teaching farm sites. Applicants should have a track-record of quality teaching and should be prepared to lead and/or contribute to KPU sustainable agriculture and food systems teaching, research and outreach programming. Candidates with a Ph.D, and demonstrated success in teaching and research will be preferred.
