Growing Hope Farm is a not for profit, volunteer run farm in the middle of Cambridge, Ontario. We have people from the community, at-risk youth and women from the local prison all volunteering weekly to help run the farm. We raise goats, chickens and fruit to sell to the community and local resturants. All of the proceeds are then donated to Mennonite Central Committee's food security program. MCC's program helps people overseas learn how to farm their land so they can have a steady food source. Growing Hope Farm aims to help their local community and the international community.
When you come and work on the farm you will be learning a lot in organic farming pracises as well as social work in the Canadian urban context.
We are located right in the middle of Cambridge, Ontario with a public transit bus stop within a 2 min walk. This would allow easy access to the rest of the tri-cities area and easy bus to Toronto via Greyhound.
This position is a volunteer position but we offer room and board in a 30ft renovated trailer on the property. We expect at least 5 hours a day/5 days a week of work to be completed. You would need to volunteer on some weekends as well since we have animals. We ask for a minimum stay of 2 weeks. Some examples of tasks are: feeding animals, collecting and cleaning eggs, giving tours on the farm, answering customers questions, cleaning out goat and chicken housing, weeding, updating social media, etc.
We currently have goats, chickens and might be getting a horse. In our field we have raspberries, strawberries, rhubarb and garlic.
We are a small farm without many people working on the farm. There very likely might just be you and myself working. I dedicate 9am-3pm to the farm and then I have to pick up my children from school/camp so after 3pm you would be working on your own. In the evenings you would be alone as I will be taking care of my kids/sports/bed time and so you would be able to go around town and explore or spend time alone in your accomadation.
